Iowa has changed in the last 5 years. Breweries have been founded, bottle shops opened, and laws have changed to allow this. It is an exciting time to be a long time beer fan in Iowa. That being said, this location is a grocery store, but unlike many you would find elsewhere.
This store has a fantastic manager who has appointed a highly motivated and educated liquor store manager, who is riding this new beer revolution to new highs. The prices are spot on, and the selection is absolutely brilliant for what is distributed in Iowa.
I grew up in Muscatine, and I lived in Ames. Both Hy-Vee locations have done excellent things with their selection and education. I had my first Dead Guy Ale at the Hy-Vee, in a small corner that was then the beer section.
Since then, they have dedicated the resources and they have made a business plan with regards to selling and marketing beer in eastern Iowa. It has worked, and they have invested the proper square footage and money to make almost all of the beer cold, fair priced, and they put a wonderful local selection in small town Iowa.
If you are in the area, it is the best place around.

The atmosphere is a basic grocery store, well-lit, straightforward, a get in and get out kind of atmosphere. The quality is very good, I have been there several times and have never had a product that's gone bad or that was damaged. The service was decent, the people there are more used to liquor and wine but they were helpful to the best of their ability. Selection was decent enough for a small town. The value and overall grade for this was decent enough, the best in town as far as selection as that goes.
