Quite possibly the reddish red ale I've ever had. Four fingers of level oatmeal colored dense foam. Nice drippy lacing. And a terrific resealable quart plus bottle.

Deep aroma of fresh bread and cookies, with a bit of candy sweetness.

Big deep sweetness, good depth, not pixie-stickish. Fruits and nuts follow. Hop snap at the swallow. Sweet finish.

Medium to heavy mouthfeel. Solid and smooth.

A big and tasty malty imperial red. Give it a try.

Pours into a becker a deep amber/brown with a large thick creamy off white head that settles very slowly, first thing I notice in the nose is the lack of hops i was expecting in a hoppy amber, some carmale and a bit of dark fruit mainly. The lack of hop presence dominates the flavors although the malt gives some nice flavors, deep brown sugar and caramel toffee with a hint of dark bread, the hops provide light drying and leafiness but really dont stand out at all.I had higher hopes from this beer, probably the first Howe Sound beer I have had that left me wanting a little more. Not a bad beer but it's not the hoppy red I was lookin for.

Bottle half pint at Bar Volo takeover. I was expected this to be more hoppy. Rather subdued taste, malty, with a little hoppy flavour in the finish. OK drinkability, nothing special. A drop of fruit flavour mid-sip.Reddish tinge average mouthfeel, appropriate carbonation.

Poured from the large swing top bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass. No obvious bottle dating.

Deep chestnut brown, almost mahogany dark with a hint of orange at it's thinnest for the body color. Head is tan an easily makes four fingers tall with swiss cheese and clumpy retention. Big Island cap and an impressive appearance.

Nose is malt forward, giving to thick sticky caramel, a little bit of banana like esters also. Real nice malt quality, so where's the hops for aroma? No grapefruit here... but an interesting juiced up fruit quality just barely peaking out.

Palate comes with much accents in the malt realm. SLightly toasty, but more of a thick bodied caramel and English herbality. Little hints of herbal green, sage somewhat, and very leafy, finishes with those aromatics on the swallow. Mild sugared syrup body, but not too bad and giving the right amount of thickness. Hardly any bitterness on this at all, with some very big malt sweetness.

Overall. It's got one angle going, but where's the other half? Where are the hops on this beer?

Review from 7/2011 notes. Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a dark red amber. Thin head dissipated quickly leaving no lacing. Aroma of strong malt, light hops and Belgian spicing. Some alcohol in aroma. Dry and sweet malt up front, light fruits and hops in the finish. Understated, but well made with a moderate body. A different take on a red ale; not as hoppy as many American ones. Could use a bit more carbonation. Nicely done.

1L bottle purchased as a single from Beverage Warehouse, Winooski, VT.

Poured into a large glass stein, formed a 1 1/2" reddish tan head over the slightly cloudy reddish brown brew. Dense head recedes very slowly, with chunky lacing. Aroma is sweet and floral.

Taste is sweet upfront, fruity in the center, balancing bitter to the close. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is way easy. Well put together brew, abv well hidden.

This ale pours a dark cloudy ruddy brown with a thick, but short-lived dark tan head. The head is pretty sticky, though, and leaves some decent lacing. The aroma is very malty, with dark caramel and sweet dark fruits. The taste matches closely, with some biscuit notes and a little hops bite on the finish. It had a nice thicker feeling on the palate and slight crispness. Reminds me very much of English ales.

Another excellent beer from these guys that really shows off the malt profile of a beefed up red ale. Huge mouthfeel that is also very drinkable this beer is not very hoppy but instead lets the malt take centre stage. The alcohol is not really apparent making it easy to drink a few pints

Nice, strong red ale. A little dark; very coppery with a creamy, off-white head. Rich malty smell and a good dose of hops. Big flavour on this; well balanced hop character. The imperial character is really subtle, it almost creeps up on you. Alcohol is well hidden and this is a real pleasure to drink. An imperial session beer? Perhaps.

Poured a one finger head of a copper like body with minimal head and lace. Aroma is mixed and balance of sweet malts and earthy hops, and I find that the light body replicates the aroma with a more sweet edge than most in a red ale but the hops are still there. Really simple, probably not a red ale for most as it's not overly sweet at all but definitely not as hoppy either. Just kind of falls in the middle with a mix of sweet and minor hops and a tiny, dry finish that is fine. I really enjoyed drinking this beer alot.

On tap at Howe Sound Brewpub, January 2010.

Appearance: Dark reddish brown, opaque, with moderate slightly off white head leaving some lace.

Aroma: Malty sweet, fruity, winter spices.

Taste: Malty sweet with winter spices, especially clove and nutmeg coming through. Slightly fruity, some alcohol warmth, vinous. No real hop presence. Delicious.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, silky.

Drinkability: Unsure of the abv, but definitely strong. However, there is enough flavour to only allow some strength to come through as a warmth. Very moreish.

Another superb beer from Howe Sound.
