No Way....This is not a beer bar.
This is a college frat bar that smells of throw up 364 days of the year. It is packed on the weekends with students chugging cheap Macros and pounding Jager Bombs.
Aside from maybe Dogfish, Sierra and Sam Adams, I don't think you will ever find any other craft beers available on any sort of regular basis.
Is it an old historic cool looking building? (the picture posted for this bar is not accurate by the way) Yes! Does it sell Bud Light and Miller Lite for like $2? Yes! But that's about all it has got going for it.
A Bar...Not a beer bar.

Wow! Kate's is listed as a beer bar? If you are looking for Bud Light pitchers and shots for your drinking party of eight then you have come to the right place. Stopped in during Newark Restaurant Week and found the place packed to take advantage of some great 2-3 course price fixed dinners. Great college town bar! Old tables and a cool bar/back bar takes me back to some of the places I use to hit during my college days when quality ran second to cost. I did a quick look at the taps to see if I would find something good and other than the usual BMCs, I saw a Victory tap (Gods be Praised!). After a delay in getting a table, we were taken upstairs to the overflow room and ordered our food and drinks. "I see you have a Victory tap?" I asked. "Hop Devil, you interested?" "Why Yes I am!". I have had the Devil a million times, but it is one of my comfort beers from long ago. After waiting around ten minutes, he came back with the other drinks and told me that they were out of the Devil. I had to settle for SN Pale Ale in a bottle; good, but not what I was feeling at the moment. The food was good, a fair price for what we had. My kid was happy with his ice cream and that goes a long way in my book. The service was OK. He told us we was the bartender covering our section due to the crowd, so I really can't fault him for some of the delays.
But back to my original rant. I know they take part in the Brewfest (like every other restaurant on Main St that day), how can we really list this bar as a beer bar. I wish I had my reviewer hat on, or I would have had researched the other beer selection offerings. One craft beer tap out of 8 does not it a destination in my book. Maybe another trip next time down there and I can get a better feel for this place. Again, if you are looking for a great place to get outstanding, huge nachos and some really good deals on BMC this is one of the best places you will find on the UD campus.

Kate's has some of the best drink specials in Newark, if you don't mind drinking American macros. I recommend this place for its good atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food, and cheap drinks. Not for its beer selection. Food is moderately priced, but quality. They got a couple big screens, large bar area, and nice outdoor patio.
The best time to go to this place is during beer events in Newark. Last time I was at Kate's was during Newark's Brew Fest and they were the only bar giving out free 4oz samplers - as many as you wanted (you just had to wait in line, which wasn't very long). On this occasion, they had 6 different Saranac beers. I got to try at least 4 of 'em (my first experience w/ Saranac - not bad at all). So I give props to Kate's for their generosity. And I bought food there to go with my beers - good business strategy. When everyone else in Newark is charging $2-3 per sample, don't skip Kate's during brew fests.

Met my wife and some of her co-workers here for a happy hour. It wasn't very happy for me. Typical college town bar. Not very craft beer friendly. Typical macros (Blue Moon seemed to be their closest thing to a micro) and colorful mixed drinks. College crowd with some of us slightly older working people, some of which just can't help reliving their youthful days at college (funny watching what had to 40+ people doing Cherry Bombs). Service wasn't bad, but when I asked if they had any microbrews I was told "Iron Hill is just across the street...that's their thing". So that's where I headed...

Being a former University of Delaware student during my undergraduate freshman year in college, once had the opportunity to check out the well-known Klondike Kate's Restaurant and Saloon which was conveniently located on Main Street in Newark, a bustling downtown avenue in a predominately college town... the street itself was an avenue filled with younger college kids who lived on campus and was a very hip and in scene... the atmosphere was very down-to-earth with a hometown feel, where most of the customers seemed to be on a first-name basis with the servers and tenders... had a decent selection on tap which included many of the typical macros, but the food was really good with a lot of different appetizers available... a good choice to grab a brew with some friends if you're in the area...
