Poured into a DeTroch tulip.

With a little agitation this small snifter of transparent deep orange nectar develops a dense frothy head about a pinky finger tall. Carbonation rises from the center of the glass at a leisurely pace to meet the thin layer of meringue waiting for it on the surface.

Vanilla, toffee, honey, and bourbon come up off the foam to tantalize your nose. It's what I would imagine it would smell like if an english candy store decided to open up inside your nose. The bourbon is pleasant distinct and clean not grainy and out of place.

Your tongue paddles out through the thick foam heading right for monster swells of butterscotch and toffee with rich delicious streaks of bourbon infused caramel. A faint but sharp citrus bitterness peaks through on the back end to brighten it up just a bit. After the swallow bourbon and vanilla front and center, but not incredibly hot or overwhelming, they are still plenty balanced by the richer flavors that also persist in milder forms.

As the beer warms the bourbon and caramel become the more dominant flavors, there is a pleasant heat from the alcohol, the soft spoken sharp citrus bitterness is all but gone. Instead there is a bright honey sweetness, in addition to the butterscotch and toffee symbiotically keeping the bourbon in check.

The mild carbonation and hop bitterness helped carry this more viscus beer over the pallet especially when it was cold. At warmer temperatures the dry boozy bite of the bourbon kept the sweetness at bay while the sweeter richer notes kept the bourbon from completely dominating, and allowing you to get pitted sooo pitted at 12.7 percent.

Overall this beer was fantastic. Incredibly balanced not overly complex just a very well choreographed waltz of the same flavors yielding back and fourth to one another as the beer warmed. It also went incredibly well with a slice of caramel cheese cake.

I was really excited for this beer and it impressed me. Glad I got a few bottles to store.

Very sweet, easy to drink, butterscotch & pineapple tasting. I don't think I could really get much maple from the flavor, but the sweetness must be due to something. Would certainly drink again and hope Founders continues to use maple bourbon barrels.

Appearance: Pours a gorgeous amber with 3/4 finger of white head. Lots of unfiltered yeast and such floating around, but this is really a great looking beer.

Smell: Maple syrup(duh), vanilla...I'll stop trying to be all fancy and say that this honestly smells like Angel food cake. Although the smell is not powerful, but there's a really subtle, awesome elegance about it.

Taste: Vanilla and maple syrup combine seamlessly up front for a sweet sock to the kisser! As this powerful crescendo of sweetness subsides, booze and subtle bourbon creep in at the end, leaving for a very dry finish that resets the palate for the next sip nicely. This drinks REALLY smooth for the abv.

Mouthfeel: Not much carbonation, but coats the mouth nicely. I've heard people complain that this beer is syrupy...well, syrup is actually IN it. I get what they're saying, in a way. However, this is not so full bodied that its lack of carbonation makes drinking it cumbersome.

Overall: This is IMO the best Backstage beer that's been put out in a while now. I wouldn't mind having a few extras for a rainy day.

A: amber in sunshine body, a quick swirl will stir up constellations of fizzy bubbles; slim finger of ivory head reduces to a slight collar

S: sweet booze and pale fruit, bourbon barrels and caramel covered marshmallow

T: lots of impressions here: pineapple, marshmallow, banana, vanilla, bourbon, oak, caramel, and holiday spice

M: medium weight, slightly sticky, slightly slick; bourbon vapor on the roof and vanilla caramel on the tongue

O: a truly fantastic beer, better with every sip as it warms - sweet up front, no doubt, but not overdone - there is nothing cloying or heavy-handed - a fantastic drink for this time of year in particular, although I wouldn't turn it down at any time of year. Not that I've had many wheatwines, but this is a top-notch beer that transcends style.

12/6/13 Founders | Sweet Repute | 750 mL

Appearance – Golden Straw, translucent, off white head, not the color I was expecting

Aroma – Wow. Getting subtle pineapple /citrus notes up front with a slight earthiness followed by subdued bourbon. You get all the great bourbon notes without the booze… Vanilla, oak, toffee, butter. If I hadn’t read on the bottle that it was aged in bourbon maple syrup barrels, I’d be hard pressed to identify the maple. Smells even better when you let it warm up

Mouthfeel – Full bodied, light CO2, a little hot, slight astringency, chewy

Taste – Bourbon is up front, best to draw this beer through to the back otherwise you might miss out on its subtleties. Great flavor. Up front it has a wheat-y citrus note, followed by maple and vanilla oak on the back end. Was afraid this beer would be overwhelmingly sweet but it’s actually pleasantly sweet.

Residual – Great aftertaste, lingering sweetness with a touch of astringency. You can definitely tell it's 12.6%

Overall – Founders Sweet Repute did not disappoint. I haven’t had too many wheat wines… The last one I had was Harpoon’s Leviathan Triticus which was fantastic. I feel like the Wheat Wine is a style with tremendous potential in the craft beer world.

While the beer itself is fantastic, I feel like it could use a year in the cellar to mellow out a bit. If you’re a fan of BA barleywines (i.e. Sierra BA Bigfood), don’t miss out on this unique brew.

Bottle from Tipples. Pours a beautiful light orange color, clear, with a slowly forming, super creamy one finger off white head. Aroma is bourbon, honey, light maple, more bourbon, some vanilla, sweet caramel malts. Flavor is tropical fruits up front, some maple syrup, wheat, honey, then the finish comes. Oh my. Beautiful layers of bourbon, vanilla, and maple syrup. Definite oak presence but not drying. Vanilla maple just sits on the palate, and this is the highlight of the beer. Very warming alcohol but not too overpowering. Big and juicy. Coats the mouth with warm booze, slick, thick, and heavy. Medium carbonation. Neat beer. Not on the level of Curmudgeon, but a neat twist with the waves of flavors. I know it has been said that this is the old Nemesis recipe, but it seems a bit different from that. More sweet fruit presence here and plenty more vanilla. Then again, I had Nemesis aged about 4 years, so maybe that’s the difference I see.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer is yellow with a mild haze. Soft white was that hangs out for several minutes, leavin ample lacing in its wake. Aroma of malt, maple syrup, vanilla, oak. Wonderful flavor. Not too sweet. Alcohol is present but really delicate and unobtrusive. Much better than Founders Better Half. Loads of oak and vanilla. Creamy and smooth on the palate with a mild warmth in the finish. Very tasty.
