This brew was served on tap at the Founders Brewing Company taproom in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It arrived in a generic nonic, glowing a dark chocolate brown coloring, with only the faintest flecks of ruby peppered across its bottom. It held a one finger head of cappuccino foam, but this retained briefly, disappearing entirely once you began to sip. Tattered shrouds of lacing were left around the glass. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared to be lighter. The aroma set the beer up nicely with notes of bright and flashy citric, grassy, and nectary fruity hops, dusty dark malt grittiness, light molasses sugars, pale wash, honeycomb, zesty orange tartness, powdered Pez candies, mild smoked tobacco leafiness, dried rose petals, and waxy strawberry lipstick. The flavoring gave light and crispy black and chocolate malts, peachy and apricot fruitiness, fermented brown apples, distantly roasted coffee and black barley, tannic tea flavoring, ceramic and cement, faint warmth of booze, Zebra gum, Band-Aid phenols, salty brown malts, hot worty barley, and of course, more of those big grassy and citric hops. The body was certainly light, and the carbonation was medium, but steely to the touch. There was thinner slurp, smack, cream, and froth, although the mouth was left oiled with the thinnest coating. This gave way to drying, but somehow wetly, powdered pucker. The abv was easy, and the beer drank accordingly.

Overall, we were very, very excited to finally get the opportunity to sample All Night IPA. Having been able to live in Michigan, immersed in the expansion of Founders, and to experience first-hand the game-changing fire sparked by their All Day IPA, we knew that if a “Night” version were to ever be released, we would have to track it down. Here, we find that the best thing about it is its aroma. It smells like the perfect lovechild of All Day and Inspired Artist (last year’s tasty black IPA release). The hops come through beautifully, running the gamut of grassy, to citric, to fruity and nectary. If you’re familiar with All Day then you’ll get pretty much what you expect here. The flavoring darkens up a bit, but not nearly as much as you might be thinking from such a dark coloring. Not a whole ton of roast anywhere to be found here. Otherwise, despite that is isn’t a far, highly exciting departure from the standards, it is a solidly approachable, and wildly drinkable brew.
