750 ml bottle into lager glass; no bottle dating, but was just released. Pours crystal clear pale golden color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, apricot, floral, grass, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt balance; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, apricot, floral, grass, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of earthy pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, apricot, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent IPL. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into IPA glass.

Appearance (4.5): Cloudy honey color with good sized white head and respectable lacing, especially for a lager.

Smell (4): Strong citrus (grapefruit and orange), making it smell like an old school APA/IPA. Some light toasted notes and booze.

Taste (4): Very hoppy with mostly grapefruit and orange. Malts are somewhere between a toasted IPA and a fruity Maibock. Certainly sweeter than an IPA would be, despite the bitter finish. Some lingering Maibock flavors.

Feel (4): Feels mostly like a Maibock, with moderate carbonation, a medium to full body that is smooth and mostly clean, semi-dry finish.

Overall (4): Very nice IPL, better than many, and some of these recent examples have helped this become a more viable style.

When the goal of IPA it to heighten hop character to the max, but to also suppress malt influence in order to let the hops stand out; why have the "India pale lagers" been so slow to mature? Well, wait no longer- that beer is here and in imperial form!

Bright gold to the eye, its appearance is the classic IPA stature but with a paler tone. Bright and floral to the nose, its perfume and grassy scent is somewhat mild, timid to release its tasty secrets. But once released, its short grain sweetness gets out of the way in a hurry in order to usher in those dominant hops.

Bold and citrusy white grapefruit, lime and under-ripe berries frame the bulk of the middle, especially after the wafer-thin malts dissolve, carrying with it a tangy and earthy taste.

Its building bitterness is unrelenting as the hops grip the throat tightly and refuses to release. Gaining bitterness sip after sip, its grassy, herbal and woodish spices tighten their grip, weaving in citrus piths, leaf and grass along the way- en route to a piquant alcohol warmth that's indicative of its high strength. Its mild astringency is unavoidable with not malt taste or texture to buffer out the hop and alcohol rougher edges.

Thanks to Joe for sharing this one!

Pours a deeply saturated golden orange, with a thin froth on the surface. Spotty lace around the edges. Lasting surface coverage. 4.5

Tropical fruit aromas, dried mango and orange peel. 4

Creamy feel with a strong hop character, citric and fruity. Resinous with a building bitterness that lingers into the aftertaste. Light mango and orange notes initially. Well built and drinkable, also pretty strong so take your time. 4/4.25/4.25

White head. No lace. Color is a clear golden orange. It looks oily.

Flavor profile: Big orange and clementine flavor. Tropical. Mangoes. peaches, and grapefruit. Bready malts. Kind of has a steam ale malt profile to it. A bit biscuity. Floral notes. Piney and hop resiny.

Mouthfeel: Bitter and sticky. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Ends dry with some hops in the aftertaste.

Overall, a really solid beer. Very enjoyable. You can definitely tell this is a lager, but it is still really hoppy like an IIPA. Good stuff.

Dissenter, an Imperial IPL with a tarnished copper hue. When backlit gold becomes dominant. Clusters of bubbles rise from a different surface of the glass each time, rushing to the surface. The foam is a white that has yellowed, slightly off, a little dirty. It initially rises to a finger in height but quickly falls to a skimming and chunky ring. The ring leaves patchy but sticky lacing.

The nose is clean and robust. Hops dominate with a big fruity, candy quality. Orange oils, candied peel, and orange liqueur all play a role. There are some minor tropical notes on the periphery with mango and papaya playing their roles, a little apricot as well. All these great hop aromas have a dusting of florals. The malt profile is semi-sweet, soft white bread. Peppery alcohol adds some depth.

Citrus and tropical fruits lead the way yet again. Orange oils, candied peel, grapefruit pith, mango, zesty lime, and papaya are all present before apricot wraps it up. The hop profile brings a ton of depth. The lime becomes vibrant as it warms, while undercurrents of florals and even a soft herbalness run through occasionally. What little malt is noticeable tends to lean toward white bread while adding a touch of sweetness for some semblance of balance.

I've had "Imperial IPL"s n the past, there always seems to either be too much sweetness or a lack of cleanliness. Dissenter has neither. The body is moderate, impressive at an 8.7% monster. The finish dries quickly to the likes of the Sahara. Bitterness is up there and I like it. Drinkability is, to dust off an old chestnut, dangerous.

Dissenter is crisp, clean, packed with hops and bone dry. It's everything most Imperial IPLs try to be and fail. Founder's nailed this guy and while this is still a bit of an odd style to me at times this version works well. As usual, go buy this beer that Founder's brewed, you won't be disappointed.
