A- Thin tan head that fades fast. Cloudy red/brown body.
S- Sweet toffee malts, light fruits, alcohol, some grapes, and a few things I just can't put my finger on.
T- Really sweet tasting toffee. Alcohol comes in strong with some light spices, fruits, grapes, and just this strong bad flavor I can't seem to narrow down. Alcohol warms up back of throat.
M- Medium body with low/medium carbonation.
D- This is just a bad beer. Bad flavors and just a bad blend of flavors. (474 characters)

smell: belgian candy smell, but a bad one. very lite and fruity.. a touch of a medicine nose.

taste: OH NO!! this is not good at all. the booze taste like cough syrup flavoring.. it all tastes very fake and off.. fake candy belgian sweetness, fake booze flavoring.. I would not be shocked if it were all artificaly flavored. way to sweet, not depth or complexity. upset.

mf: why do i bother. this feels like bad beer.

12oz bottle purchased as a single from Julio's, Marlboro, MA.

Poured into a heavy glass chalice, formed a minimal 1/8" layer of bubbles over the cloudy orangey amber brew. Head is down to a spotty layer of swirly teeny bubbles almost immediately, with little to no lacing. Aroma is syrupy fermented apples. Taste starts with a quick flash of malty sweetness, quickly overtaken by a strong licorice flavor in the middle, and closes with a powerful shot of alcohol. Mouthfeel is tough to handle, and drinkability is cut short by the burn. Not one I'd go searching out again anytime soon. (589 characters)

Aventinus had begun that day like any other -- preening infront of a mirror. He was, after all, one of the finest beers in existence and he knew it.

But Gambrinus is a capricious god and does not tolerate such egoism. So, he decided to play a trick on prideful, prideful Aventinus. Now, there are many variations of the old story floating about -- some say that Aventinus could only love himself and that Gambrinus granted Aventinus's wish by having his female counterpart, Aventina walk through the mirror one morning. Others say, in a story which is perhaps much closer to the truth, that Aventinus was slumming in some seedy bar near the Kellog plant and had a tryst with some flashy (but ultimately unfulfilling) macro lager.

While the details are lost to us, the result is not -- Bad Habit (possibly named for either Aventinus's narcissism, or for his habit of slumming -- this is the strongest piece of evidence for the latter version of the story).

So, what is Bad Habit? Well, the smell is initially fairly exciting -- bits of banana, hints of clove. It really takes after his father, very weizenesque with a hefty dose of alcohol warmth to cut the spice.

But it is all downhill from there. A razor-thin mouthfeel leaves a great deal to be desired, while the potenital of the malts and sugars are left completely behind as raw banana takes over. Nothing exciting, nothing interesting, no wheat-spice nor even clove (really) to back it up. It tastes like a homebrew that was fermented far too hot. Some say that it was merely recessive genes that Aventinus had always had, but rarely manifested all comming to the fore -- others insist it was a legacy from its macro-lager mother.

Regardless, this is a child that would have been better served by being locked up in the attic, never to be heard from again. (1,829 characters)

Appearance: Pours a light, hazy copper body with no real head or lacing to speak of.

Smell: Stinging aroma of concord grapes and rubbing alcohol. Quite similar to a cheap, well brandy.

Taste: Harsh and astringent, to say the least. Hints of dry, stale bubblegum mixed sweetened fortified wine paint a picture of a beer gone horribly awry. However, any amiss flavors are immediately drowned out by the blisteringly hot alcohol burn. In a word: Yeesh!

Mouthfeel: Thin-bodied, with an oily, sticky mouthfeel.

Drinkability: All of the wonderous qualities that make for a truly delicious quadruple were totally abandoned for this brew. Definitely the most un-quad "quad" I have ever tasted, and a real stomach churner, too. (731 characters)

First of all, not what I was expecting for a Belgian Quad.

A-Pours like a barleywine with a copperis body and absolutely no head. The body appears with a syrupy, candy slickness.

M-Not much detected other than fusel alcohol. A harsh acetone smell fills the nose if a deep whiff is taken.

T-Much more like a belgian barleywine to me. (That sounds like a great next homebrew to try!) The spicy hops fight with the strong Belgian yeast strain. A coarse hop flavor finishes with a pseudo-sweet taste. Somewhat medicinal in taste, but not as bad as it probably sounds.

M-This is not a terrible beer, but the harsh finish leaves the tongue like sandpaper. The bittering hops come on too strong for this type of style.

D-High in alcohol and lots of taste, but nothing here blends that well. I wanted a much heavier malt presence in this and it was a bit thin and overboard.

Maybe I am being too hard on this beer, but true quadrupel fans will, most-likely, be disappointed in this attempt by a great brewery. (1,023 characters)

Pours a clear amber copper color, with a one finger head. Pour retention leaves nothing behind.

Aroma is a train wreck of booze. There is a tiny hint of caramel malt aromas, but it is overwhelmed by the alcohol. Pretty bad smelling.

Flavor is luckily a bit better. Some malt flavors up front, with nice toffe and biscuity notes. Sweet, and with a distinct presence of candi sugar. The finish is pure alcohol burn. Mouthfeel is heavy, slick, and coating. Drinkability is pretty low, due to the outrageously prevalent alcohol.

Overall, I think this is pretty bad, which surprises me, considering the quality of other founder's beers. Borderline drain pour, if I wasn't sipping it slowly. Normally, I LOVE Belgian quads.... this one just misses the mark.. by quite a bit. If you like rubbing alcohol, this may be your beer, otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it. Thanks to DeeJayDan for sending it to me, I am very glad I got a chance to try it.... it's just not something that I'd spend my money on again. (1,009 characters)

I am more than a bit disapointed with this beer, it may just be a case of a brewery trying to take a good thing too far. The alcohol was overpowering, almost like the beer was too green. I enjoy a high gravity brews but the alcohol was almost burning with this one. Very spicy, hints of bananas. Not super drinkable. Founders stouts are much better. (349 characters)

12oz picked up in trades (sorry I don't remember everyone who has sent me one of these, I promise I am keeping better trading notes now.) Poured into my red wine glass and am still listening to Sasha's Involver mix.

Hazy muddy orange pour... waaaay to big of a head. Lacing is good.. but nothing even remotely great.

Bazooka Joe bubblegum, banana and harsh Belgian yeast spicyness dominate the nose.... sugar syrup with lively fruits.. plums... plums... a little bit nutmeg. Alcohol is hot... If it was warm enough, I could set it on fire.

Flavor is candy sweet... Hefeweizen banana and cloves... too much, way too much fruitiness... I normally need a little sweetness to tie together the Quad flavor nuances, but this is nearly off the charts. Mouthfeel is heavy/thick and cloying... I've been sitting on my last bottle of Bad Habit for close to a year now (thinking that time would do it well) ... My notebook reviews show the same disdain... although, this review is not nearly as bad as when I first had it back in January. I wrote, "Bad Habit needs a recipe reformulation and this bottle needs a LOT longer bottle time". That being said, I would really like to score another 4-6 of these and not touch them for 3-4 years. (1,229 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into Chimay goblet.

Pours a very flat hazy cloudy baby poop brown color. Decent amount of floating matter in the glass, and the tiny bubbles around the edge of the glass don't add much appeal.

The smell is very interesting after 6 or so years in the bottle. At first it smells like a cognac with nutty notes and cherry booziness. Then I get whiffs of pure apple cider. There is also a definite cardboard mustiness, but nothing really overtakes the surprising fruity booziness. Lots of apple, cherry, banana, and alcohol ester.

Taste is downright abrasive and not in a good way. Rotten banana, booze, rancid cider, and wet cardboard. Age has not been kind to this one. This is the last bottle from the cellar and that is probably a good thing. I remember this one being boozy when fresh, but I am shocked at how boozy it still is. Booze and off flavors is all that is left here.

The mouth is flat and oily...definitely well past its prime. If Founders decides to make a quad again, I will most certainly try it, but this beer is happily retired. (1,069 characters)

It pours to barely translucent honeyed auburn color topped with a quick and short rise of sand.
Fried banana and stewed apple nose, all slathered with drywall, and drowned in some sort of shitty, vinegary, cooking wine.
It begins all in fruit and stays there for, basically, the entire durations. But this is fruity in the way things like Skittles are fruity...that is, sweet and generally reminiscent of some type of fruit you've had at some point in your existence, and it is absolutely impossible to tell exactly what the fuck that little pink one is supposed to be. This is that little pink one.
Let's call it a pomegrantangeloplantainkiwiblackcherry fruit. Good enough, and it sounds marketable. It's more or less concentrated extract here, because it is loud and syrupy sweet, in the realm of "18% Juice / 82% High Fructose corn syrup fruit "cocktails".
All nonsensical digressions aside, it starts and stays with the heavy sweet fruitiness, edged with a rindlike tartness. It's muddled partially with pervasive gauze-pad and dried tea pastiness, which is essentially the Belgian yeast strain and hops rolled into one semi-obnoxious counterflavor. Still, this is more Hawaiian Fruit Punch than St Bernardus. Even the alcohol, which is strong on the swallow, is painted over with the syrupiness. And that's fucking saying something.
The only beer it even sort of brings to mind is North Coast's Old Stock Ale, and that one at least had some degree of balance on it's side. This is more a horrible Barleywine, unbalanced and oversweet, than some sort of interpretation of a Belgian style. Actually, it tastes more like a poorly made daquiri, except it's not frozen.
Heavy, clingy and cloying. The mouthfeel is a mess.
Ultimately, it's not terrible as the sugary fruit hues, artificial as they are at times, have some small degree of likeability, just as Kool Aid and Skittles do. But on the whole (and more importantly, as a BEER), it's well out of whack. (1,962 characters)

Not impressed with this offering from Founders. Pours a brown-ruby, almost no head at all and it disappears quickly. Smell is vinous and bubble gum-esque in too strong of a fashion. You can almost smell the heat that you expect this beer to exhibit on the palate. It should be more concealed and hidden than this.

The good news is it actually tastes a little better than it smells. You get the essence of bubble gum and grapes reminding me of grappa. There is some alcohol heat but it is delievered in a somewhat unpleasant way--a little more gentle than it smells but still one of the poorer examples of a quad that I have tried. I still love Founders as a brewery. I will just chalk it up to a style that they didnt quite hit right. (737 characters)

Pours a nice dark Golden orange with a half finger of white that melts to a ring of white lace.
Aroma is definite belgium....soft sweet fruits like apricots and peach with Belgium bready yeast and a hint of the alcohol in this brew coming on the tail end.
Taste is candied fruits...candied apricot and peach....then heavy on the alcohol. A slight bubblegum taste as an aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is rich and full with lots of tiny carbonation tingling the tongue.
To me, this Belgium quad just misses the mark. The elements are there...they just aren't there balanced or right. (576 characters)

Common examples include: procrastination, fidgeting, overspending, nail-biting - Wikipedia. Pours a very clear amber red color with a light brown hue through out. A little light for style but ok. A soft fizzy head that hid to the edge of the glass and not much for lacing.

The nose is sweet, even for a quad. A candy like sugar nose up front with some minor sweet caramel and malty undertones. Not really depth or complexity. Very limited yeast aromas, too clean in a way. Some minor plums and figs notes but subtle. Some minor medicinal and light metallic/coiny notes but light.

The taste is bit more on style but still lacks that distinct Quad taste. The malt is sweet with sugary note and a mild caramel malt taste. Limited overall, I would like to see more depth and body. The esters come out a bit more versus the nose. Some plums and raisins with a light sweet orange flavor. A bit too clean for yeast but only minor off notes. Light plastic/medicinal, no where near the nose. Some minor alcohol, very clean considering the ABV.

The body is moderate to moderate full. Really lacking the depth and complexity that I would like for a quad. Carbonation is light but ok. Some warming from the alcohol, but mostly clean. Overall, easy enough to drink but just needs to take a step further with the malt and yeast temps to add that complexity. (1,346 characters)

12oz bottle with a puckered-lip monk on the label. the image makes me think he drank some of this beer and didn't quite like it. hoping things turn out better for me here.

pours an uninspired auburn with no head save an ultra-thin ring around the surface layer. rainbow parabola of creamed lace. phenolic papaya-infused aroma, very invasive and somewhat acidic. too bold in the nose for a quad imho, but this could be promising for the flavor within.

initially buttery, balanced somewhat by sweet brown sugar and rotten cherry syrup flavors. finish sneaks up on you, avoiding what i thought would be a problematic boozer.. however, the aftertaste is very dry and bitter. kind of a mess for a quad, i was hoping this would showcase more mild burnt sugar/caramel notes and subtle fresh berries and dates. naah, either this is entirely too young to drink or contains entirely wrong yeast. i'm able to finish the bottle but i certainly won't revisit on my own dollar (except the one i have left, which will cellar for a year min.) (1,032 characters)

Thanks to JohnGalt1 for this brew. Drank from a nonic pint glass since I didn't feel like dirtying my snifter (thing is hard to clean!).

Appearance- Pours a murky reddish brown with heavy carbonation. Lots of yeast swirling around as they are bounced back-and-forth by the carbonation. Forms a very small off-white head that maintains a decent collar for the duration of the beer. Semi spotty lacing slowly traces down the glass while you drink and eventually dissipates to nothing.
Smell- Lots of sweet dark fruits such as cherry, plumb and grapes. Very musty from the yeast and semi bready from the malt. Light alcohol vapors.
Taste- Very sweet upfront. Almost too sweet. Has a malt liquor like quality to me. The alcohol is very prominent. Like the nose, there is still a big fruit punch from this with a almost orangeish like quality to it. There is a cherry like dirtiness to this brew that isn't as horrible as it sounds.
Mouthfeel- Heavy champaign like carbonation with a heavy, malty feel. Lot's of alcohol warming and semi dry finish.
Drinkability- Although this isn't the worst attempt at a Belgium I've had, it wasn't exactly made by a monk. It has some flaws but is not undrinkable by any means. If you're looking to try something different and new in an old style, maybe give this a shot. If you want a terrific quad, find something made by a monk. (1,374 characters)

Harvest orange with butter rum colored trim. Unfortunately, the beige crown is small, soft, less than sticky, fizzy and isn't exactly coating the glass with lace. It's difficult to imagine a Belgian-style ale that looks less Belgian. The high ABV may be a foam killer, but I've seen plenty of high-ABV ales that were more attractive than this.

The aroma sketches the faint outlines of the style when bold brushstrokes are called for. Each sniff delivers cherries and berries macerated in Stolichnaya. If the beer is this boozy now, it must have been something else back in the fall of '06. Will it be more competently buried on the palate?

Founders is one of my favorite American craft breweries. I had to get that in because Bad Habit is not a good quadrupel. In fact, it's a car crash of a big ale that, nevertheless, isn't a *total* loss. Where the hell do I start?

A considerable cherry cough syrup sweetness is cut off at the knees by a rubbing alcohol quality that undermines the whole operation. The remainder of the flavor profile includes butter toffee, black cherry, red raspberry and pink bubblegum. Can BHBQ possibly be brewed with nothing other than malt, hops, yeast and water?

It feels stupid to grant an average taste score since Bad Habit is anything but average in the 'run of the mill' sense. With respect to quality, however, the above score is entirely appropriate. I think I'm starting to hallucinate. Are we sure this stuff isn't 14.8%?

The mouthfeel isn't as big or as sticky as anticipated. It starts out that way, then dissolves into lightly viscous and modestly mouthcoating. A few too many fine bubbles don't help the cause.

Founders is not in the habit of brewing less than delicious beer. However, they missed the mark widely with Bad Habit Belgian Quad. They should either go back to the drawing board or should forget this colorful mess entirely and concentrate on brewing the beers that we all know and love. Breakfast Stout, Kentucky Breakfast Stout, Imperial Stout, Red's Rye, Black Rye, Centennial IPA, Devil Dancer... and on and on and on. (2,177 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Leaves less than one finger of a tan tinted head that fades to just a foam ring at the edges, and it leaves no lacing. Body is a hazy light garnet.

Smell - horse blanket, cloves and bananas, and hints of plums and apricots, and a hint of spicy alcohol.

Taste - horse blanket with sour cherries, plums, apricots, and a hint of saltine crackers, all washed through with some medicinal alcohol.

Mouthfeel - thin bodied, and fluid.

Drinkability - this is decent, but not great, and the high abv holds down the sessionability. (562 characters)

Medium pour in a snifter.

Poured copper with a tiny off white quickly diminishing fizzy head.

Smelt of strongly bubblegum, bananas, sherry, cinnamon and cloves.

Taste was upfront sweet banana, cheap brandy (or more like the European alcohol "marc") , cinnamon and cloves, followed by a harsh yeasty barnyard and mold bitterness on a long finish that dies back to a pleasant banana/bubble gum feel. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, fizzy, creamy, moderately astringent, and excessively alcoholic.

Overall, the pieces are there for a good brew, but the alcoholic feel is just too strong and overshadows the overall feel of the beer. (709 characters)

Very nice-reddish orange hue. No real carbonation to speak of. Low aroma. Sweet malt. Piney and vinuous. Big malty flavor with a tinge of alcohol burn in there. I hate to use the word to describe it but it was "shrimpy" tasting to me. Fishy/metallic like flavors. Good body-I dont have much to compare it to quad wise.Fairly dry in the finish department. Ok overall-not much here to rave about. Most Founders beers knock my socks off-this is too much booze and malt and not much else for me. I would say to at least try and form your own opinion. (546 characters)

Pours a very opaque and muddy brownish red in color. No head forms at all on the pour. You can immediately pick up some fruity tones upon popping the cap. That's where the positives cease. This tastes like a fruity alco-pop. Very fruity and alcoholic. Like a cheap bottle of Mad Dog 20/20. Medium mouthfeel and a somewhat cloying aspect. I love my boys at Founders, but they severly missed with this one. (404 characters)

Pours a murky dark brown that leaves a thick tan head. The aroma is fruit, prunes, figs, brown sugar, plums very inviting with a suttle hop earthiness. The taste is initally good, toffee a bit of alcohal is just faint enough to be noticed. There is a bitterness for balance, followed by a banana fruit salad feel to this brew. As this beer warms up I get more of an unpleasantness from this offering. It starts to taste like cherry nyquil with the alcohal and fruit feel on the palate. This offering from Founder's gives you a Jekyll and Hyde performance in the beginning it is great but as it warms up the alcohal and off fruit flavors dominate and make this a below average quad. (681 characters)

A - Poured a deep copper color with an off-white head. Some laceing.

S - Strong aromas of fruit, some plum, some orange citrus, spices, and caramel. There is some alcohol present.

T - There is some funky glue like flavor right up front. That flavor stays there all the way through it. Strong malty sweet comes into play, some vinous characters, and the alcohol on the end.

M - Dry, right off the bat. There are some other notables like the carbination sharpness in on the front of the tounge. It also leaves a litttle bit dry down the center, but there is some residue in the end.

D - For the style, its close, maybe it needs some age. (647 characters)

Poured a hazy medium copper color with a very thin off-white head. the head disappeard quickly leaving a thin lacing for the remainder of the glass. Smelled of bananas, bubblegum, maybe even a little apple. Medium body with a good amount of carbonation. The taste again was strongly of bananas, sweet with a light sour citrus kick. They hid the alcohol well, i mean you know it's there, but it's full strength doesn't let itself be known until after finishing off the bottle. Obviously this limits it drinkability to a lightweight like myself. Not bad, but it just doesn't suit my tastes. (588 characters)

hazed slightly orangey ruby brown with almost no head.
fruity bubblegum aroma with coconut, vanilla, brown sugar, and a little yeast. a little bit of maltiness is detectable as well.
lots of bubblegum in the taste, with coconut and vanialla. it's got a cidery quality that adds some sourness to the mix... malts show up at the end a little with a little caramel and pepper, followed by a little alcholic burn.
pretty full mouthfeel with relatively active carbonation.
decent drinkability... but it's pretty damn sweet like bubblegum apple cider. i'm giong to cellar the other two that i have and see if it improves, it just may. (632 characters)
