Founders finally made it to Central PA!

Pours a luxurious copper/burnt orange with a hazy, foamy thick head. The beer has a resiny and hoppy aroma, a little more spruce like than piney...Taste is a good balance of malt, rye and hops. Slightly sweet initially, with a good bitterness following. I think this is their best beer!

Firts of many Founders brews Iam gonna partake in over the next few days, pours a deep amver with a nice fluffy two finger head leaving a nice sheet of lace behind.Hops, hops and more cirus, piney hop with a little lemon wedge in there made me wanna tear into this one,I am almost at a lack of words on the flavors and refreshing complexities of this beer, spruce and piney hop with a nice firm nutty malt backbone finishing with a perfect tartness wich just caps this off making for the almost perfect rounded beer.Damn why did I pass this up in the past I will be bringing this home with me back to NC for sure.

Pours an orange-amber with ruby hues and a healthy cloud of floaties. Thick, lasting head. Great lacing!

Bits of sour citrus, mega hops, alcohol, spice and sweet wet malts make up the aroma.
Taste is all big fruits and big rye. Tangy and spicy throughout with sweet malty start and a great hopped bitter finish. Creamy and chewy mouthfeel. Warming. Husky.

This is a superbly drinkable brew.

Pours a nice copper color with a sustaining off-white head. Smells like a basket full of dry rye and grains with a bunch of flowers spread on top. Citrus notes play on top of it and near the end as well. I'm also getting some biscuity tones, too, possibly from the yeast, heavy in the background. The taste is a nice mix of toasted rye and hops. The hops explode in the form of pine resin about halfway into the sip and the slight grapefruit-citrus hints leave a nice flavor on the tongue, too. The rye and malt flavor balances the hops and slight citrus sweetness very well - an acute dry, bread-like flavor to play alongside a bitter, piney, hop gash. As the beer warms up (especially near the end), the caramel toasted malt really starts to become pronounced. Medium mouth feel, slightly dry finish; a good amount of carbonation makes this beer very enjoyable to drink.

A nicely balanced beer with a nice touch of rye and hops. The rye adds a nice element of dryness that works extremely well with the citrus. A good red, a good IPA, and a good rye beer.

Reviewed from notes on 8-1-10.

A: Pours an eye catching ruby-amber into my snifter. A light to medium pour yields no head, but a nice spider web of foam stays on top of the body. Some of the carbonation bubbles make their way slowly to the top, while other speed with reckless abandon. A good lacing is present in the form of small dots and long, wavy lines.

S: This is a supremely fresh and intoxicating bouquet. Notes of orange, orange peel, lemon, and lime marry wonderfully with a nice malt presence and the slightly spicy rye grains. This is one of those beers that as soon as I pop the cap, my nose is drawing the smell from the the bottle.

T: Grapefruit-like hop bitterness grips the sides of my palate as soon as the beer hits it. That sweet orange, lemon, and lime flavor shuffles on the top of my tongue and the rye breadyness shows itself at the end of the sip, while the bittering hops clean the palate of the citrus sweetness. This is a delicious beer.

M: Medium-bodied for the style with a great puckering bitterness throughout. Just the right amount of creaminess tantalizes my mouth before the hops and rye dry my palate right out.

D: This is one of the best full-time offerings that I've ever had from any brewery. It strikes the perfect balance for a "Rye PA" for me. There is a copious amount of citrus hop flavor, nice barley and rye malt, and yeasty breadyness available to my mouth. Simply put, this is a great beer.

Poured into a pint glass from a 12 oz bottle. The pour was quick and smooth, creating a nice 2 finger thick tannish head which SLOWLY diminished(leaving a nice lace down the glass) as I was enjoying drinking it. The beer itself a deep ruby color.

It had a fruitish kind of taste and scent. Not being the seasoned beer reviewer at this point, the hops and malts part arent yet disdinguishable to me. I would say balanced. Being a 6.8% ABV beer, the ABV wasn't overbearing at all, since I dont care for beers that taste like Nyquil.

Mouthfeel and drinkability was smooth. Very delicious beer.

Pours amber with a thick, cream colored head.

Aromatic flowery hops in the nose, juicy pink grapefruit, rye spiciness, pine.

It doesnt' taste as good as it smells to me. Lighter bodied with spicy bread notes that muddle slighty with the citrusy hops. Finishes with a lingering hop bite. Has a nice gulpable quality.

Overall, a nice beer, but not something i'm going to drink often.

Traded by Csmiley-Thanks Chris!

A-Little head, reddish, orange and cloudy
S-Slightly boozy, sweet malt, some pine flavor
T-More piney hops than expected, balances out with sweet malt. There is a little bit if a rye bread flavor which adds to the bitterness on the end.
M-Creamy mouthfeel and good carbonation
D-Above average and well crafted but I don't think I'm a huge fan of rye in beer so I wouldn't reach for too many more. Well crafted beer though

Received a 12oz bottle in a local 4 local beer trade. It pours a nice dark apricot body with a creamy head. Great lacing on the grass. It didtnt produce a strong aroma like I expected but you get nice hoppy/tropical fruits. It has a nice smooth mouth feel that is mildly hoppy upfront, but you get a spice from the rye towards the end that highlights the hops. Im not a big fan of rye beers but I love this beer. I wish I could get it locally.

A - Cloudy dark amber with ruby tones around the edge. Low carbonation and smallish head that fades to a covering leaving a good it of lacing.

S - The rye really comes though along with some roasted malts. A bit of grassiness along with some citrus and fruit from the hops. Complex and awesome.

T - There are a lot of IBUs in this beer but all that malt, with the sweetness of the rye balance it out perfectly. Good hop flavor, a good bit of citrus along with some floral/sweet type flavors. Again, great complexity and flavor.

M - Moderate body, would like a bit more carbonation to clean it up a bit at the end to get you ready for the next sip.

O - This is what I would call a complex beer, I can see it pairing with so many foods. This is a great beer that I wish just looked a touch better.

First of all, I don't know if Founders decided to change the recipe of Red's Rye beer into Red's Rye P.A., or if it is just a name change. But I searched for Red's Rye P.A. and didn't find it, so I'm adding it now. The label reads, "Hopped-up Ale brewed with Rye."

Poured a dark-reddish amber with an off white head. I couldn't smell any aroma when I tried this beer. Medium bodied, caramel malt flavor and no distinguishable hop aftertaste, not good for something that is supposed to have an IPA characteristic. It was not balanced, malts dominated and there was a strong alcohol taste. Overall this one missed the mark.

Deep, opaque reddish brown pour with a thick, foamy two finger head sitting nicely atop. Thick lacing on the side of the glass. WHOA! Amazingly beautiful grapefruity citrusy hop nose radiates off this brew. A spicy, caramelly background finds its way in there as well. But those hops...man oh man does those hops smell good!

Caramelly, nutty malts hit my tongue first with spicy rye in the mix as well as mixed fruit tones. The grapefruity, citric, floral hops do not miss a beat and bring a healthy dose of bitterness. This is a well balanced brew...with a very nice malt/hop mix. The rye spiciness gives it a nice unique twist. Yum!

Mouthfeel is nice and creamy with a medium body...good medium carbonation. Easy to drink. I wish I had a sixer of this stuff as I could enjoy a few more right now. A damn fine beer....I think more brewers should experiment with rye. Cheers to Founders...I look forward to drinking this one again soon!

Pours a dark brownish, garnet color with a voluptuous light tan head. A bit cloudy, but the bottle was inadvertantly stored on its side during chilling, so that might lead to some of the haziness. Head stays 'til the bottom. Great looking brew.

A strongly hopped beer with lots of citrus grapefruit and some lemon grass as well in the nose. Taste is a solid hit of rye throughout. Initially a dark rye bread taste compliments a subtle bit of sweet caramel malts. Finish is dry rye and hop bitterness. Some floral hops come through just before the finish and add a bit of character to this very dry, rye beer. I'd like to see some more sweet malt flavor in this to counteract some of the rye. A good flavor, but not as well balanced as some other rye's I've had. Edit: As I approach the bottom the overwhelming rye flavor has turned me off to this beer. Its decent but needs something to balance this out.

Mouthfeel is fairly full bodied, and finishes dry. Drinkability is okay, a bit unblanced which detracts from its drinkability. I'd just like to see some more malt character.
