Picked this up at Julio's in Westboro. Happy to see they were carrying Founders, although no Breakfast stout. Boo hoo.
Beautiful reddish brown coloring with a very slight foggyness. This is clearly an unfiltered beer as well. Little bits of stuff floating around in there. I even poured carefully to keep the bottom out. Not a huge head, but enough to leave a gauze across the top and ring around the edges. A few fingers of lacing.
Nose is big time hops. Crisp and floral with a warm maltiness underneath. Brown sugar hints linger in the nose. While the hops present themselves right of the bat, a little more sniffing reveals a great deal more complexity.
Honestly the taste is the opposite of the nose. A full sweetness presents itself right off in the creamy round mouthfeel. This opens up elegantly into the hop floral bitterness that hits a high and then mellows into a wonderfully balanced warmth and cleanness. Finally at the end a subtle ghost of smokiness wisps in and disappears. Lingering light bitterness in the mouth for quite a while.
Very very good. I'd love to have this on tap. It's probably extraordinary.
