Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a 4 ounce taster.
Appearance: It looks good. Dark amber hue speckled with carbonation. Just a tinge of red to it. Moderate-to-heavy lacing as the head recedes. I feel like I will enjoy this one.
Smell: It holds its own. Slightly pungent with a very detectable bitterness. Good rye, good hops. Very little sweetness to the scent. It's above average.
Taste: The large part of the taste is bitter. Slight caramel flavor to it. Citrus and spice notes are present, but are not strong enough to ruin the drink. Aftertaste is strong with this one, and leaves your mouth feeling a bit dry, leading to another sip. :-) I'm happy that the sweetness does not overpower with this one.
Mouthfeel: Very prickly, but in a good way. It stays light on the tongue with active carbonation that doesn't detract from your ability to savor the taste.
Drinkability: It's a little bitter, and definitely too heavy to be considered for a session beer. However, its flavor and bite are good enough to warrant a future purchase or two. It's a good beer to taste, and certainly holds its own. I could drink this on a weekly basis.
All in all, this beer is pretty much a standard rye beer. For what it is supposed to do, it does well. Not my favorite style of beer, but I have nothing really negative to say about it. Give it a try, only you can decide for yourself. *Shrug*
