I reviewed this beer the other night while listening to Luigi Dallapiccola's "Canti di prigionia" which is this ridiculously difficult atonal choral piece from about 1940. Atonal music has been warming up to me more recently, and coincidentally so has rye beer. This is definitely the beer to try if one is warming up to the style. I poured this one into my Michelob Amber Bock glass.
No freshness date.
A: Beautiful beer! The body is a cloudy orange-red sunset in the desert...I am getting carried away. The orange tinted tan head head is full and sticky, leaving some respectable lacing before dying to a thin layer.
S: Also, a beautiful smell! I am getting whiffs of cotton candy, melon, berry and citrus hops. The smell is just saturating. It is soaked with pungent hop aromas. It also smells incredibly sweet, as one could tell by the cotton candy aroma coming out of the glass.
T: The sweet smell that I was getting out of the beer is surprisingly absent in the taste. In its place is an assertive spice that is attributable to the rye bill (and maybe a bit by the hops). The hops definitely do their job in bumping up the IBUs. Very bitter aftertaste, strongly hopped. The alcohol also kicks the flavor a few times.
M: Light-medium body with minimal carbonation, however not flat. The mouth is left with a slight hop bruise after the first few sips, but they do not dry out the tongue as I have sometimes experienced with "big hop" beers.
D: It is exciting to drink. Wonderful introduction to rye beers for me. Founder's treats it more like an IPA, but with this rye character, there is something different than other IPAs.

No label information. Red's Rye P.A. is brewed in the style of an American Pale Ale brewed with Rye. Originally a year round release, Red's Rye has since been relegated to fall seasonal 12 oz. 4 packs with year-round availability on draft.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 56º Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a caramel-white head of a foamy frothed consistency over a moderately hazy red amber body. Thin specked sediment generates mild cloudiness, carbonation is moderate. Retention is above average, lacing is medium and stringy. 4
(Smell) Most trained noses can easily identify the bready, spicy characteristics of rye up and front, with a mellow sweetness and subtle graininess. Other aromatic notes include a light herbal hop profile with a subtle bitterness and a mellow fruitiness. 4
(Taste) Lightly toasted grainy caramel and peppery, spicy rye collectively form a flavorful malt body, fairly clean despite its assertiveness. Hop notes are herbal, peppery, slightly citrusy, although fainter by comparison, with a moderate bitterness, although the graininess of the malt bill seems to generate the most balance to the subtle sweetness of the brew. Subliminal undertones include lightly roasted coffee beans and herbal tea. 4
(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, mildly dry, peppery with a mellow graininess. Carbonation is soft, forming a smooth, lightly frothy mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Alcohol presence is moderate, off characters of mild graininess may impede drinkability, but often come with the territory of rye and caramel malt. 3.75
(Overall) An enjoyable beer by Founders. They manage to pack a lot of malt flavor into this bottle. The Rye makes for a thicker, spicier and more peppery body than Pale Ales without it, so this is a worthy try for anybody who wants a Pale Ale with a bit more malt character. I recommend enjoying it as fresh as possible as the hop flavors do not take long to drop off. 4
