Poured from bottle into a Samuel Adam's Perfect Pint. A beautiful opaque orange with a foamy head and good lacing, quite lovely.
The smell is of grapefruit/citrus hops and perhaps a mild biscuity malt. The hops dominate the taste. If I use my imagination there might be a background of rye somewhere, but honestly the hops dominate this ale. The rye probably has an effect on the taste but it's not dramatic. I put it into the pale ale category rather than a rye ale. While the hops are big and delicious it's a balanced brew, reminding me a little of a toned down Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster. The taste really comes into its own as the beer warms. The malts are more present and flavorful.
It's medium on the palate with perfect carbonation. It's hard to drink only one Red's Rye Pale Ale and anything that follows other than another Red's has a tendency to be disappointing.
