Pours, well....guess what red! The body is rather hazy, to the point I was a bit surprised given the style and brewers weird desire to make beers clear. Good lacing and head retention though over a huge head on this one.
Good citrus grape fruit hops on a plate of yeasty bread. Nothing intense here but does the job.
Small complaint then on the the massive praise! The rye that is spoken of doesn't really get into the picture as much as I'd want or expect. I don't get that rye bitterness, no peppery flavor, none of those things I'd generally expect. Instead we've got a wonderfully hop forward beer with a biscuit and dense body that gives it an impressively balanced flavor without turning the sweetness up. I should point out this is where the rye is working, but it seems to have gotten things right here. Some caramel flavors are what give this one enough sweetness to get past the bready and biscuit like backing.
Firm body with plenty of smooth carbonation make this one extremely drinkable and very enjoyable.
I'm not sure I'd seek this one out, but where available it is an almost must have from time to time. I hear so much love for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but frankly those people must not have access to this one.
