This brew pours a red/ copper color with a mild off white head and moderate lacing. There is heavy carbonation and the brew is mostly see-through.
The smell is strong on rye, grapefruit, orange and pine. There is a strong sweet malt backbone with a hint of caramel. There is also a hint of tobacco taste.
The taste starts with rye and grapefruit then moves to tobacco then finishes with pine. There is a strong sweet malt/caramel backbone which is present from beginning to end.
The mouthfeel is smooth but also a little chewy. There is a pine resin left on the tongue after swallowing.
Overall, this is a well balanced rye beer. It is not as heavy on the rye and peppery spices as other rye's I have had but the strong sweet malt backbone makes up for that. It could be said that this is a rye IPA for those who don't like to be overwhelmed by rye.
