Bottled: 01-17-2012

Poured into a standard pint glass.

A: clear cherry oak colored ale, with a medium off-white head with good retention.

S: Piney hops aroma clear without muddling of any wanton smell.

T: A lovely even blended hop sensation. As the bitterness rides the tongue through the swallow, a lingering intensity is noticeable towards the back of the tongue. A wonderful sensation with excellent attack and fade.

M: With a beer like this, it would be foolish to expect anything less than near-perfect feel. there is an amazing clarity in the taste - clearly there is a very fine control over quality here.

O: This is an excellent rye ale. A must have for those who love IPA's. A great characteristic to the hops flavoring and a crisp well-blended nature make this a definite upper-echelon brew.

A- Deep red amber with a just off white head. The head was rich and foamy. Decent head retention and light lacing.

S- Nose is a little sweet and hoppy. A little spiceyness, with some pine and a touch of dank. Citrus zest, with a hint of grapefruit. The malt / rye doesn't seem to do a whole lot to the nose, but there is just a hint of bread notes to the aroma.

T- Really solid. Fairly complex. Sweet caramel up front with some rye complexity that adds some spice and just a hint of a sour note? Maybe sour? Maybe I'm losing my mind. Anyway, the hops show up to party after the malt and rye. Solid piney bitterness. Just a hint of citrus. The finish is nice and dry with a bit of a bitter aftertaste.

M- Smooth and awesome. Founders nailed the mouthfeel .

O- This is a really drinkable. Fairly complex, great hops and easy to drink given the alcohol content. I really like this beer and I think it is a great everyday drinker.

Review from notes taken on 2/25

Off-white head dissipates as quickly as it is poured. The color is sort of an iced tea brown with a tinge of red amber. There is a nice lace topping the beer that hangs on to the glass a tad.

The aroma is more on the rye side with hops present but difficult to really identify. The hop character on the nose is more citrus than floral.

The taste is nicely balanced with citrus hops of grapefruit and a distinct rye backing, which mixes in the finish with some bitterness from the hop, as a slight biscuity chewiness. When it warms it seems to get sweeter like brown sugar.

Overall, this a fine IPAish beer. The rye is a nice compliment to the grapefruity hops. The carbonation is light and could be a bit more.

A great beer that I will have again.

12 oz. bottle served in a FFF pint glass.

A: Pours a deep amber color with a dark light brown body. A one finger, off white head forms on the pour and has some solid retention. The head slowly recedes to a thin film and a thick collar.

S: Tons of sweet caramel, bready and cheerio's cereal on the nose with a great balance of grassy and resiny hops. The rye is light and seedy with a mild spice.

T: The forefront of the brew is a solid combination of biscuit and caramel malts that slowly mesh with a nice rye bread that pops up mid palate and stick around throughout the whole sip. Light resiny hops provide a subtle bitterness on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with solid carbonation. The malts and rye provide a nice sweet and bitter finish. Highly drinkable.

O: A great rye beer. It has a great balance both in the nose and the taste between the malts, hops and rye. Each provide a great aspect to provide the caramel sweetness, light bitterness and mild spice. Will enjoy again.
