Pours a cloudy reddish with a decent head.

Citrus hops in the aroma, with a bit of rye.

Citrus and rye are the dominant flavors as well. Nearly an IPA, but balanced with rye and caramel malt flavors. Flavorful.

Mouthfeel full and carbonated.

Worth seeking out. I think I prefer Double Trouble to this, but this is interesting and a quality beer.

Poured from the bottle into a trusty 16 oz. pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a nice deep amber color with moderate carbonation that looks uneven - some steady streams of tiny bubbles and random larger ones flying to the top. A 1 and 1/2 finger head is present at first and it's very rocky, quickly fafdes to rough and sticky looking lacing at the top. Leaving an oily foam on the sides of the glass as fades as well.

Smell: Hit right away with a powerful pungent bitterness on the opening of the bottle. Once it's gets poured it mellows considerably in its strength, but upon placing my nose in the glass the hops are once again attacking my senses. A very bitter presence, mostly piney with a fair amount of grapefruit-like citrus as well.

Taste: Very unique - this is my first rye beer and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It is amazingly bitter, and once the bitterness fades just a little bit the rye taste is very present as well - almost a bit sour. It's got a malty backbone to it but fairly subdued -- really allowing the strength of the hops and rye to rule the flavor of the beer.

Mouthfeel: Oily and sticky - just about right for a style with this much hoppiness to it. Leaves a thick coating on the roof of the mouth and tongue.

Drinkability: Overall, a very nice beer that, from what I've read, represents the style well with its grainy rye presence. My personal taste is what's affecting the slightly lower rating that what I wanted to give it, but the rye flavor may be more of an acquired taste or matter of personal preference, but as mentioned, it does go down a bit sour and I haven't ventured into that realm as of yet. So here is where I'm leaving it. I'll likely try this beer again though because it is quite tasty and even a bit of a challenge to decipher all of the interesting flavors going on, so maybe my taste preference will even grow into its favor.

On-tap at Woody's City Market and reviewed from notes, served a nice crisp red with a decent off-white head. Aroma is citrus hops with a touch of rye. The taste is a nice balance of rye malts and citrus, slightly piney hops. The beer is medium bodied with decent carbonation. This is certainly one of Founders' best year-round beers.

This beer looked great in the glass with a nice amber color, but upon drinking I was a little disappointed. It tasted and had a mouthfeel of a watered down IPA with some of the hop flavor cut out. Definitely not for someone who is looking for a good hop flavor in an IPA.

Pours a clear, amber color with some suspended yeast. 5/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells hops, a general sweetness, a grainy characteristic that I'm assuming is rye, and some alcohol. Fits the style of a Rye beer. Mouth feel is smooth and slightly chewy with an average carbonation level and a noticeable dryness associated. Tastes of hops up front, some ginger, very slight alcohol, then strong rye, and finishes with a rye flavor and strong dryness. Overall, this is a pretty darn good rye beer and definitely worth a try.

pours a beautiful golden caramel copper hue, murky yet richly glowing, with a toasted caramel colored half-finger head of a thick chunky foam that slowly fades, leaving some descent lacing down the glass.

aroma echoes a rich ipa... strong caramely malts paired with some impressive green hopping. pine and herbal hop notes, with just a smidgen of spice. smells beautiful.

taste is even more impressive than the aroma, thanks to a healthy spicy rye that harmoniously intertwines within the rich caramel malt and fresh, piney hops, adding just enough unique spice. a bit of citrus, lemony and fresh. almost a lemon-pepper-rye thing goin' on. This is what I'd imagine a solidly Rye'd IPA would end up - clean, crisp, well defined, and anything but the usually muddled, murky mess that many rye IPAs try to pass as palatable.

Mouthfeel is solidly close to perfect. Carbonation is just a bit rough, although it does cut through the thick and almost syrupy body pretty nicely. Full, rich, yet vibrant and bright.

Delicious. The rye notes add to what seems like an impressive and balanced IPA at it's roots. which is how it should be. The rye notes are delicious and add depth and complexity that's unrivaled. Possibly one of my favorites that I've sampled from Founders.

A great looking poor. Dark golden red with a head that leaves lacing all the way down the glass. The smell is hoppy and you think you are getting another hop bomb of an IPA (not that this would be a horrible event by any means) but then you taste it and the rye comes out and mingles with the hops and it is fantastic. As it warms the rye starts to dominate and the beer changes a bit, but in a interesting way. Good at the beginning, good at the end, it is a tremendous brew. I'm getting a little tired of Founders just showing up with beer after beer and kicking butt and taking names. Seriously Founders, let some other breweries get a shot at the top of my ratings, it is embarassing. I feel like such a fan boy.

On to the review.

A - Ok. Thicker than I was expecting. A red brown color. Very little head. Was served around 44 degrees so right there on temperature. Huge chunks of yeast and material floating all around the beer even after it was poured very carefully into my glass. Never really settled to the bottom. Just kind of "weird" in my book. Reminded me of fresh maple syrup in color and consistency. Just average.

S - Hops are very present. I was wishing there was more of a Rye presence being picked up but there wasn't. I love Rye....that is why I was a little disappointed. Doesn't smell bad, once again different that I was expecting.

T - Average. Wish there was more of a Rye taste but instead loaded with hops. A milder bitter taste...almost sweet as the ale slides down the throat. Still can't get past the HUGE chunks of "stuff" that won't settle to the bottom. White to yellow mustard in color. Just not what I was again expecting. Nothing to write home about if that is what you are wondering.

M - Thick. Coating. Not Impressed. Covers the entire mouth and won't let go. Have to swallow several times to get everything to go down. Yeah....not so much to my liking. Sorry.

D - Nope. Not impressed. Thick. When I want a thick beer, get me a stout or a porter. Not a clean crisp rye beer. Won't search this one out again....unless I know that it is fresh.

Maybe I should go visit my buddy Karl and we could have one of these at Founders. Would probably taste much different.

It took me about 10 minutes to pour the entire bottle into the glass because the head was overflowing everywhere. Once I got it out the bottle the head lasted until I finished drinking the beer, leaving small pieces of tan foam on the sides of the glass. Beer had a strange appearance where it was darker at the top than at the bottom.

Had a strong hop scent to it with a hint of the rye. Was a bit heavy on the carbonation which was not surprising considering the head on this one. Overall had a good flavor. Would consider trying one again.

Copper color with massive tan head, wicked huge lacing that sticks around forever. Stunning looking beer.

Massive hop aroma - amarillo or cascade? Tons of it and extremely hoppy tasting. But has a ton of sweet maltiness also. Nice complexity here, really challenges your pallate to figure out what is going on.

Nice solid feel which allows all the complex flavors to linger and lets you really savor the experience.

This is a complex beer and the sweetness of the caramel malts built for me reducing drinkability.

Overall a must try for sure. If you were going to have just one beer, this would be a great choice. Very hoppy & spicy would overwhelm any lighter beers following it.

12 oz. into a pint glass/ no freshness date

P: Honey brown from the bottle, deep amber with orange highlights in the glass. Tan head is nice and creamy with medium bubbles on top. Disappeared quicker than I'd like to a thick halo while leaving some spotty lacing.

A: Citrus, pine, and herbal hops flood the nasal passages, while the rye malt comes through nicely on top of a little booze. Not extremely powerful, but smells very good!

T: Starts pretty hoppy with notes that match the nose. Citrusy, piney, slightly herbal hops are pretty oily and resinous, but I really wish I knew how old this was because they seem like they've faded a bit. Still very good, just not as powerful as they probably once were. Sizeable rye malt holds down the fort and brings that great spicy rye component that I just love, while a hint of caramel is detected underneath. Maybe it's because of the age, but this is very well-balanced right now.

M & D: Medium-full, rich & smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. Drinkability is great, I just couldn't get enough!

Notes: Why more brewers don't use rye malt in their beers I'll never know. I just love that spicy element that this unique brewing grain brings to the table. I get the feeling that this is just a smidgeon past the "optimal drinking age", but is still quite delicious nonetheless. Straight-forward and to the point, very nicely done!

A - Two fingers of rich thick lush tan head... Impressive head retention is noted as the head bounces back and forth with each and every sip... Beautiful golden bronze color... Only the slightest bit of carbonation... Foam clings to the glass the entire way down and doesn't fade on bit...

S - The hop profile hits the nose first... Biscuit... Rye... Caramel...

T - Similar to the nose, the hops hits the palette first (Chinook & Saaz???)... The rye quickly asserts itself and battles with the caramel malt backbone for supremacy... It's a wonderful interplay that provides tons of complexity... The malt fades and the rye aftertaste lingers, in an enjoyable way, for quite a while... Once it dissipates there's one more faint burst of hops...

M - Rich and thick, but not heavy... Near perfect balance... Consistent beginning to end...

D - Superb beer in all aspects... This is a fantastic brew that I would have no problem drinking year round...

Got this great bottle from Brawleys in charlotte nc.
Pours a dark redish brown. Nice little amber head.
Smell is full of rye and malt with some subtle bitter hops.
Taste is heavey on the rye malt, delicious, sweet roasted flavor and some good complex hop finishes. Mostly pine and floral hints in the hops

Pours a hazy dark copper, with a thin light tan head.
Spicy aromas hit first. Has the aroma of rye bread. Rye and grassy hops dominate with some nice bready and carmel malts. Strawberries and watermelon come through too. Quite complex.
Spicy flavors too. Rye and grassy hops dominate the flavors. Some mascerated strawberries come in too as in the aroma. Very interesting.
Nice mouthfeel. A little watery, but also a little sticky.
Very drinkable. Great flavors and a decent enough ABV make this a solid drinker.
A very good beer that I look forward to getting more of when Founder's finally comes to GA.

Cheers to deliriumfest for this one.

Excellent, excellent beer. It's almost painful to get a beer this good in a trade. Founders is beginning to seem like one of my most wished for breweries to expand their distribution to California. I realize that craft beer is still a relatively small market, and, perhaps, any one are can only sustain a certain number of breweries, but, damn it, it's still frustrating. I need a job that let's me travel into other distribution areas. Ok, that's enough digression. This beer is a red amber liquid with a nice head. It's relatively clear and glows when backlit. Good looking beer, but this beer does a lot of things right. The smell is a lot hoppier than I was expecting. There are some big pine and citrus hop aromas on this one with an underlying spiciness. The flavor is not the overwhelming rye-ness that I was expecting. The slightly sour rye notes are there, but they don't dominate. There's wonderful sweet malt and bitter hops. Everything works in balance and in a complementary fashion. The feel is refreshing yet full, but the rye just pushes the whole package over the edge from great to exceptional. Red's Rye is a very, very well-crafted beer.

Poured into a mug.

A: Nice clear, reddish-amber color and dense off-white head. Retained well and laced very nicely. I'm a sucker for a good red color.

S: Very spicy rye nose dominates. Also picked up hints of toasted barley and a bit of hop earthiness. It's almost like smelling a loaf of rye bread, fresh out of the oven.

T: Again, intense rye spiciness, but nicely complimented by a toasty malt character and a bit of earthy, grassy hop flavor. Almost like an IPA or an English bitter in character. Very nice.

M: This is where this beer really shined for me. The medium body was silky smooth, the carbonation was perfect, and the finish was about as clean and neutral as I've ever tasted in a beer. Very well constructed!

D: A sure pick for a session rye. Goes down smooth and leaves one wanting more.

I was a little apprehensive about this one at first, it being the latest wild card in my latest mixed sixer. Upon review however, it may just be the best of the bunch! This brew has totally changed my view on what rye beer can be. I would highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates good beer.

She pours a slightly golden red with a white head that stays for the duration of the beer. The lacing is pretty heavy, excellent retention.
The smell is citrusy hops, a bit of rye malt, followed by some crisp pale malt. Alcohol is not present.
The taste is immediate hop bitterness balanced shortly by the crisp lighter malts and rye. Delicious balance.
The mouthfeel is perfect, crisp, refreshing, this is a perfect year round session beer. Easy drinking, decent alcohol content. This is a go to everyday beer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Color is on the redder side of amber. Not much head, no more than a finger, but still nice thick rings of lacing.

Aroma reminds me of an IPA, with some spicy rye tossed in...big hops on the nose, grapefruit and floral notes.

Spicy rye and hops. Good bready malt backbone. Slightly dry finish. Medium body, some thickness. Very smooth. Tasty.

Poured from 12oz bottle into pint glass. Pours a murky red color with a half finger of light tan frothy head that leaves thick lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell is pretty mild but a balance of citrus hop smell and biscuitlike smell, I can't tell which is more dominant. Taste is instant rye/wheat flavor immediatly followed by smooth Amarillo hops and malt. Taste is strong but not overpowering. Medium bodied mouthfeel that coats the tongue with rye flavored goodness. Very drinkable, I session this beer at my favorite beer bar often. This has been my go-to beer lately on draft but have had this bottle in my fridge to review and they taste very similar. This is my second favorite beer to eat spicy foods with(second only to alpha king) and truly a treat when you want a flavorful beer that doesn't destroy your pallate. Quite simply a great beer from a great brewery.

A- Pours a light tan colored head 1 inch in height. The head seems to display a nice retention. The body is a hazy dark red/amber color. As the head recedes, I can a nice ringing lace coating parts of the glass.

S- Bits of spicy rye, nice floral hop aromatics with notes of grapefruit and pine. The malt profile is nice and buttery with caramel and some butterscotch.

T- Starts out with some excellent spicy rye, some nice malt backing it up with some buttery caramel and the finish transitions into some very nice big hoppiness, nice and dry and semi-astringent. Also on the finish is a hint of green apple skins along with the nice hop dryness.

M- Low carbonation is suitable as per style. The dry finish is great.

D- I was a little underwhelmed with this beer. It was good but not great. I will probably try this again sometime, but it's not something I'll actively seek out.

Had this at the recommendation from a friend in B.A.R. 6. Poured out a rich amber color, sort of this maroon-ish brown. Quite attractive. Smell didn't really hit with much. Sort of a malty sour smell, but not in a bad way. Taste was quite good. Dull piney/floral hops. Good malt profile. A little on the bready, dry side, but it didn't run the drinkability or the overall mouthfeel. Overall, not that complex of a brew. Simple but well done. Had I not known any better, I would've classified it as an amber, just on color and malt tastes. Give this a try if you see it, and I get the feeling this is one of those beers that is much, much better on tap. As I've seen my friend order one at a bar once, and it looked amazingly fresh.

Been on quite a Founders kick lately, with both Breakfast and Impy Stouts being huge hits. Red's Rye seems to be the next best available, so I was ready to give it a shot!

A: Medium amber color with a significant head that displays good retention and lacing.

S: Piney and slightly sour (due to the rye), with some underlying peach aromas.

T: Opens with an immediate bitter, sour rye and grapefruit pith aspect, with the peach slightly peaking through underneath. The aftertaste was a decent but the bitter/ sourness got a bit too much of the upper hand.

M: Medium bodied, a touch thick, and fair carbonation

D: Another really solid offering from Founders. May not be my favorite sytle but this is pretty impressive. Probably more of a Red than a Rye (I think it's closest comparable is Red Rocket by Bear Repub), but it does a good job of stretching the style (into IPA territory) while still staying true. Not quite up to par with their Stouts, but worth a shot if you're looking for something original.

12oz bottle into a regular pint glass. Not sure how old this bottle is though.

A- Red's comes out of the bottle pouring a not deep red but slight red with copper mixed in as well. A pretty slow pour yeilded me four fingers of beige head so i took a break. When i got back the head faded but left the best looking lace patterns i've seen that were bumpy resembling a mountain range.

S- Red's gives off the expected rye scents backed by hop scent(amarillo) and malt sweetness. Some ripe fruits seem to make their mark also. This one is on the pungent side.

T- The rye is up front as well as the hop's which tell's me i picked up a fresh bottle thankfully. A bit of graininess as well as well as a good amount of caramel from the malt varieties. All in all a well rounded beer.

M- This is only a bit less than a medium mouthfeel as well as ample carbonation probably too much. The rye flavor and slight bitterness from the hops is felt throughout. A slighty off setting aftertaste with some sour twang, again only slighty.

D- A great offering from founder's that i'm glad is available year round at a nice price. Will get again in future, maybe bring a case to a party to turn some new converts. Not a session beer but good for a few. I just wish founder's had freshness dates.

Pours a very nice ruby color with two fingers of white head.

Scent of hops, rye, and ripe fruit. A balanced and bitter scent, I like it.

Taste of strong rye, hops, ripe fruit, and grass. The rye flavor is a little strong to have multiple glasses of this in one session, but I will enjoy that one glass while it is there.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with good carbonation.

Slightly cloudy amber complexion with quickly dissipating head, minimal lacing. Aroma is a burst of citric hops up front, with a slightly spicy, earthy background. Palate is a toasted rye malt complimented by the persistent hops. Slightly medicinal and herbal. Light, smooth and oily with an astringent finish. A really very nice brew. My only critique is that the hops could be a touch more balanced between the aroma and the taste. The hop blast up front is not matched in the palate. But this is a really really good beer, a nice uniqueness to it with the rye spice, and well rounded in every respect.
