Pours a nice reddish amber with decent head. Despite it's light color, this thing pours nice and thick! Very surprised with the hefty body. Smells clean and piney typical of an IPA. Taste is wonderful. Nice clean and refreshing but not thin. Has wonderful mouthfeel and nice and creamy with no bitterness. A great fantastic beer.

Firmer malt and a spicy grain undertow allows this strongly bittered beer to resemble IPA, but with some balancing accessorizing. Founders is happy to allow the rye grain to heighten the sense of hop bitterness, even if malty compromises occur. A risk perhaps, but one worth taking.
Its handsome and masculine deep burgundy hues are quite suggestive of its toast, caramel and delicately pungent grain sweetness. But the dominant grapefruit, orange and pineapple hop character that wafts over the nose and early palate sing its American IPA praise.
In a bready-sweet body, the taste peppery taste of rye pierces through the sweetness and provides a husken toast flavor that's both hearty and spicy. While sweetness fades, armatures of honeycomb malt texture gives support to the hop onslaught to ensue. The quick taste of citrus peel and pith turns decidedly bitter in rapid succession. The steely caramel taste that's left balances the rye but doesn't interfere with the hops.
Raw and somewhat rustic in taste, it nearly earthen taste from rye and barley offers a moderate semblance of balance even though the ale's finish is malty-dry and deeply resinous with torn pine needles, evergreen and citrus. Both its medium body and Its long bitter-sweet finish is the perfect companion for American cheeseburgers.
