Sold on nitro and poured from a growler into a Founders snifter. The pour is nice and black with a perfect, dense frothy tan head that lasts quite a while. The nose has nice, mild toasted malt and coffee aromas and a faint, sweet, chocolate-like note as well. No fruitiness or other ``off'' aromas.
The beer has a medium body and a surprisingly bitter flavor. I don't mean to imply that the beer is really bitter, just that it's more bitter (and less sweet) than I thought it would be. I get some toasted malt up front and a slightly bitter roasted coffee and hop component at mid-palate. I definitely get a nice grainy, earthy character from the oats. The feel is firm, slightly creamy, and very silky, but does not at all seem thick or viscous. Believe it or not, this beer finishes a bit dry to me and that earthy flavor lingers.
I realize that oatmeal stouts can cover a wide spectrum between sweet and bitter. I think this may be the first one I've had that sits this far on the dry, earthy part of the scale. It's not as dry as an Irish-style stout, but it's certainly no milk stout or sweet stout. A very interesting interpretation, but I think I prefer a little more sweetness on the palate (even at the expense of some of the silkiness on the feel).
Serving type: nitro-tap
