A Founders take on a classic style, brewed with a generous amount of flaked oats, chocolate malt, roasted barley and a healthy helping of Nugget hops, Founders Oatmeal Stout is nitrogen-infused to give it an extra smooth and creamy mouthfeel. An attractive cascade effect gives this beer its forthright visual appeal—and the body and clean flavor deliver on that initial promise.

From: On-tap at Crane Alley, Urbana, IL
Glass: Standard US pint glass
Founders' Oatmeal Stout is an enjoyable version of the style, the flavor being much more expressive than the aroma. With its chocolate, dark caramel, burnt toast and coffee flavors, this was a satisfying beer on a fairly cold fall evening. If it was more readily available, I'd certainly get this again.
Arrives with typical cascading nitro head, fadin to a 2.5cm cap of beige foam that rests atop the beer for the entirety of the glass. Lacing is excellent, thick, heavy patterns cling to the sides of the glass. Body is a dark brown to black, opaque, no visible carbonation.
Aroma is of ephemeral roasted malt, giving a light dark chocolate, burnt coffee, and smoke flavor to the beer, somewhere between moderately expressive and mediocre. Definitely above average, but would need to be more expressive to be considered significantly so.
Flavor of very dark chocolate with some very dark caramel malt (C-120?), burnt toast and coffee grounds. Front of palate is smooth, slightly sweet chocolate with mild burnt toast characters, a bit bland. Mid-palate experiences smooth, slightly bitter chocolate with hints of coffee, charred toast, acrid bitterness from the roasted malt, slight caramel; generally complex and good. Back of palate finds brnt toast, dark chocolate, coffee, and smooth caramel-like sweetness. Aftertaste of dark chocolate with mildly burnt toast, and a bit of dark caramel and burnt instant coffee. Acrid and bitter via the roasted/black malt (bitter first, then chocolate, toast, and coffee).
Beer is medium-light in body, smooth with the nitro tap, the beer feeling simultaneously feeling smooth, thick, and flowing due to the nitro. Closes dry, with moderate stickiness on the palate.

Just perfectly balanced. Not light, not thin, but also not too syrupy or alcohol-forward like KBS.
Overall the best in class stout.

Deep brown color. Smells of coffee and cocoa. Strong coffee flavor. First try of a coffee stout. Will have to try again.

Nitro on tap at founder
Look: deep brown with a think creamy head that lasts for quite a while
Smell: super marly, black licorice, bread
Taste: roasty malt, bitterness on the finish
Feel: thin creamy feel, light,
Overall: nice. Pleasant light ABV brew - nothing really jumps out as exceptional but also nothing really to knock either

Nitro tap. Super roasty with tons of flavor. Drinks way above its ABV. Tons of charred malt, chocolate, and wood. A great beer on a cold night and truly delicious, emphasizing the strength of oats in a dark beer. Fans of stouts will appreciate the full flavor and rich feel.

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a nearly pitch black color with a one finger head of off-white colored foam. The nitro driven head has a great level of retention and slowly fades over time to leave rings of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of an oatmeal and roasted malt smell. Mixed with these aromas are a little bit of crème and vanilla and a hint of an earthy and herbal hop.
Taste – The taste begins with a very smooth oatmeal and nicely toasted and roasted malt flavor with hints of cocoa and caramel. The roasty and oatmeal flavors create a base flavor for the taste and remain strong throughout. The caramel and the cocoa fade a bit as the taste advances and are replaced by some flavors of a very light earthy hop, some very light coffee and a hint of char. At the very end comes some crème and a bit of herb, leaving one, for a 4.5 % abv brew, with a nice smooth and robust roasted oatmeal taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – With the nitro pour the body of the brew is silky, creamy and smooth with a very rich overall feel. For the dark roasted, and oatmeal tastes the feel is fantastic and accentuates the rich tastes even with the lower abv.
Overall – This is a fantastic presentation of a dry oatmeal stout. It is lower in abv (great for sessioning) big in flavor, very easy drinking, and super smooth in feel. A very well done brew overall!!
