look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4
Pour: Bottle into conventional glass. A store find, but unfortunately probably rather old.
Appearance - 3.75 - Some lacing but little head, looks boozy and thick. Deep amber
Smell - 3.5 - Mostly smells of hops and candy or sugar. Pleasant but nothing unusual or overwhelming
Taste - 3.75 - Mouthfeel is the immediate impression, but a strong bitterness and malty finish dominate. The immediate taste is something like maple syrup, or maybe maple/apple syrup. Then some pine as the bitterness lingers. A complex taste profile, made for sipping. This might have rated higher, a 4 or 4.25 for me, but the hop bitterness gets in the way of the beer after about 5-6 sips.
Mouthfeel 4.5 - Very thick. Many dark beers have far less body, and this was unexpectedly nice. Very syrupy, which I like.
Overall - Solid 4, especially considering this bottle had probably been sitting for six months or more. It was a challenging beer to consume, but each sip was interesting.
