had this at founders on tap. i have never had such a hoppy tasting beer before - including 120 minute IPA, 90 minute IPA, oracle, pliny the elder, double jack, etc. at bottleworks in seattle i bought a hop-flavored hard candy and it tasted similar. the taste is hops, hops, hops. pleasantly so, but intensely bitter. after you swallow, the hop bomb of an aftertaste hits you and it tastes like that candy - which also has an unfortunate resemblance to chewing on dank marijuana.

i finished my beer, but it was hard to do. i enjoyed it, but the hop bomb at the end with the specific hops they are using that taste grassy/weed-like make it bordering on unpleasant. i'd drink one again, but i'd reach for an oracle (only 2% less ABV) far before this.

p.s. the 2011 version is on the chalkboard as 13%, not 12%.

An extra from a trade with DocHo11idaze. Bottled 5/15/2014. Poured into a pint mason jar glass.

A - Pours a deep translucent brown amber with only a thin collar of foam and loose spots of lacing.

S - Boozy, piney, malty, funky, and a bit musty. Smells like a moderately aged 90min , which could be good or bad...

T - Probably the maltiest IPA I've had. In stark contrast to fresh flower and pine bombs like Heady and Pliny, this is a dank, oily, syrupy, earthy sort of brew with a subtle yet long-lasting bitterness. It's sweet, dirty, and funky.

M - Pretty heavy and oily on the tongue. Barely elevated by its carbonation. This is a weighty brew.

Overall - At 12% ABV, this one is quite boozy and goes right to the head, so be careful with it! If you're used to the bright, bitter, flowery kinds of IPA's, I definitely recommend you seek this one out to get a taste of the dank side.

App: Single bottle ($5.99!) pours a very rosy amber with modest head.

Aroma: caramelly hop syrup. Sensing the 12%

Taste: boozy fruit punch, caramel, cherry cough drop, goes from sweet to bitter to fire breath.

Mo: gentle carb, noticeable alcohol warmth, body isn't overwhelming for 12%

Over: I knew this was a polarizing beer, and I was in the mood for a big beer (which I am no stranger to), so I kept an open mind. Glad I tried it, but I won't revisit this one again. I was surprised to just stumble upon it and I remember the guy at the shop talking about how good it was lol.

Value: horrible

Interesting, expected something stronger. Not necessarily a bad thing. Robust without over powering hoppines. Malty start is as vibrant as some of the great imperial IPAs out there. Though enjoyable, I preferred the back woods bastard from founders. Cheers!

Pours rusty amber and red with a this line of beige bubbles. Not really enough here to count on any head retention and a few flecks of 'lace'.

Caramel notes out of the malt that is more of a corn syrup and alcohol mixture. Hops provide a dark tangerine and apricot tone with some apple juice mixing with the sugars.

Malt is way lighter here than on the nose, thank goodness, a nice bready quality with backing of caramel and molasses. Hops hit with dark orange citrus and an herbal backing, somewhat onion-y and gnarly that carries through the bitterness in the finish. Herbal and earthy in the aftertaste that compliments the bitterness.

Smooth carbonation, a sipper but not overly heavy handed. Solid over the palate and you can feel a nice viscosity allowing the hops to stick. Alcohol is present but well under what I feared.

A sipping DIPA with a crazy amount of malt and surprisingly enough hops to balance, though it doesn't particularly excel in that department. I was fearing the size of the beer but it is drinkable in its own way.

The color and smell of the beer is great. It has a nice caramel color and a sweet hoppy smell. At 12% the alcohol content is a little high for my liking, but its a nice beer to sip on for a lazy cool afternoon. To me this is more of a fall beer to drink at night.
