had this at founders on tap. i have never had such a hoppy tasting beer before - including 120 minute IPA, 90 minute IPA, oracle, pliny the elder, double jack, etc. at bottleworks in seattle i bought a hop-flavored hard candy and it tasted similar. the taste is hops, hops, hops. pleasantly so, but intensely bitter. after you swallow, the hop bomb of an aftertaste hits you and it tastes like that candy - which also has an unfortunate resemblance to chewing on dank marijuana.
i finished my beer, but it was hard to do. i enjoyed it, but the hop bomb at the end with the specific hops they are using that taste grassy/weed-like make it bordering on unpleasant. i'd drink one again, but i'd reach for an oracle (only 2% less ABV) far before this.
p.s. the 2011 version is on the chalkboard as 13%, not 12%.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
Pours a deep, rich amber color. Not much head to speak of. Decent lacing.
Not too much smells here. Definite booze. Some citrus/grapefruit/lemon. Some floral notes.
Good taste. A little malty for an IPA. Pretty boozy, but not overpowering. I like malty beers, but as far as IPAs go this blurs the line between an IPA and a barleywine.
Good mouthfeel. Very full and creamy with light carbonation.
Like the dogfish 120, I'm gonna age two or three of these and see how they do in a little while. Looking forward to the next time!

My first Founders!!! Can't get it where I live in CO. So when I saw this triple IPA on the East coast I had to try it. Big IPA fan but didn't expect the barley wine quality. Beautiful red color. Very intriguing smell. As for the taste the malty base hit first. Bready, some citrus, strawberry sweet maybe. Took a while to figure this one out. The mouthfeel is what was disappointing. I would have enjoyed this much more if there was more carbonation. No way I could sense the 125 IBUs I was expecting. Overall I enjoyed the beer but I felt like I should have bought the double trouble for my first Founders IPA experience.
