bottle into snifter
appearance: dark hazy copper/amber, slight 1 finger white head, minor lacing
smell: lots of tropical fruity notes; citrus, some grapefruit, apple, somewhat floral. also plenty of caramel and sweet, sugary malt, you can smell some booze but for 12% it's VERY well hidden.
taste: Off the bat you taste the hops (obviously, i mean it's a Triple IPA..), very earthy and floral, not as citric and tropical as the nose suggested, but it still has an abundance of great tropical hop flavor. The middle is slightly acidic, getting lots of phenolic yeast and alcohol warmth, yet it's very well balanced against the hops and malt bill, overall I was surprised that this was as smooth as it is, I was expecting the booze or hops to take a dominant role but they all fit together nicely. The malt backbone is sweet and almost sugary, remind me of a Lagunitas. Getting some notes of caramel and apple mid-palate as well. The finish is where the booze comes through a bit more, and honestly I was expecting a little more bitterness from the hops, as it doesn't really linger too long. But that's testament to the great job founders did in brewing this well balanced enjoyable beer.
mouthfeel: not too carbonated, medium to thick bodied
overall: It seems that this is a super hyped beer that is actually underrated, I though it lived up to the hype. Maybe not the price, but damn this is a great beer. Not too sure what the difference between a triple IPA and a really strong DIPA, but this is very well balanced, has enough hops to satisfy a hop head but not overwhelming bitterness like a Ruinten or Ruination, and has great floral citric flavors to match. Well done Founders, I waited long enough to try this and am thoroughly impressed.

Bottled 5/24/13 at 45 degrees into imperial pint
Aroma – very deep pine/hemlock aroma
Head large (6.5cm), frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing to a 2 mm layer
Body clear, more amber than orange
Flavor begins with a thick sweet piney taste, very resinous, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate is medium, oily to syrupy, with a light bitter finish
I realize this beer is technically past its prime, but has aged well, becoming a very smooth flavorable ale. I’ll be buying more to cellar.
