It's National IPA Day (8-1-13), so I figure what better beer to celebrate the occasion with than a triple IPA.
A- Hazy amber that's basically opaque. Decent head for the abv. Light tan. Ring of retention head remains. Soapy lacing.
S- Big aroma of sweet malt and booze. Honey caramel biscuit. Floral hops also make their way.
T- Sweet caramel malt base provides a strong backbone for the hops to take a ride on. Chewy confection-like sweetness. Some phenolic spice. Hops and bitterness comes in late, but not overly bitter at 112 ibus. hops seem to be mostly pine and earthy floral. Booze present and warmth in the back of the throat.
M- Dry, full body, and remains moderately smooth for the abv. Creamy. Clearly a big beer to drink/sip with caution.
O- Solid, but not spectacular. My biggest complaint is the sweetness level of this one. Tons of malt instilled to battle the bitterness level. A nice beer when taking the abv into account. Would have loved to see Founders back off just a bit on the malt bill and let the hops do the talking a little more. A bold effort for sure as we have come to expect from this brewery. Just hard to justify the price point.

12oz bottle poured into snifter.
Appearance-pours murky dark orange, with a 1 finger off white head. 3.5
Aroma-lite grapefruit juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, orange. This really is a great mix of citrus and malts. Reminds me a lot of brunch. 4.5
Taste-strong bitter overripe grapefruit at the front of the tongue. In the middle you get some of that brown sugar sweetness. Aftertaste I'm getting a bit of tobacco. Very interesting taste. 3.75
Feel-full bodied, ABV isn't terribly noticeable even tho its high, this beer fells like a barley-wine to me. 4.25
Overall-this is a very interesting brew, I figure its a lot closer to the barley-wine than a IIPA. Those styles have always been close in my mind, especially the stronger IIPA's. this is one your gonna want to take slowly, let it warm up a develop a little. At its price point, which is high, you be stupid to rush. 4
