Got as a freebie in a recent trade. It was bottled 6/17/11 so i'm guessing it will be past it's prime, but, for documentation, I am going to review it.

Appearance: Golden amber with some red notes. Thin head

Smell: Grapefruit, with a large hop nose which is really impressive given how long ago it was bottled. It does a slight fruit funk to it; almost a very small does of banana? Again, it's probably past prime, but I'm still really impressed with how good and strong the nose is given the bottle date.

Taste: Very big hop profile to that, wow. Finishes in the classical, 'this was good but man this would have been a lot better a couple months ago'-past prime IPA bitter. It has some almost toffee or caramel to it. Some alcohol is present but still, damm, there is a lot of hop in there.

Mouthfeel: A good amount of carbonation in there moves things around nicely. Thickness is on point with the style.

Overall: Hop bomb! Wow there was some hops in there. Even 7 months after it was bottled, it still had a very floral palate and nose, very impressive! There was some good grapefruit in there but it was still past its prime. I really would love to try this fresh. *grumbles to self about freebie way past prime IPAs/ want to have this fresh!***

Bottle dated 6/5/11 poured into a Russian River Belgian glass

Poured a hazy dark orange color with a ring of white head that leaves surprising lacing.

Even at 7 months old, there is huge, juicy hop aroma. Lots of citrus, grapefruit, pine needle, and onion.

Taste is different from any IPA I've had. There are tons of spices here. Onion and garlic are as prominent as the citrus and grapefruit. Also, there is a serious caramel malt backbone that provides an odd balance given how strong the flavors are. Long lingering hop aftertaste mixed with alcohol.

Big chewy body that sticks to your tongue for what seems like forever.

I really hope I have the chance to try this fresh one day. Even with the age on it, I enjoyed the beer, although the taste still has me puzzled.

Notes from a long time ago, I guess I just forgot to post them on BA.

Had on tap at Crunchy's at Founders night after having CBS for the first time!

10 different kinds of hops that pretty impressive lets see if it turns out as good as in theory.

Short notes:

fluffy head white the head clings in specks, red transparent beer. subdued floral hops, pine neddles and a odd spiciness. bit buttery, strongly hopped. Kinda and odd sourness to it. Very Bitter and semi dry finish. Medium to low body, on the higher end of carbonation.

Very expensive for what it is I'm disappointing for 7 dollars a sniffer.

1/12 Review:
What the shit is this? haha. Thanks dragomni, for burning my taste buds right off.

I could only handle a few drinks of this, and the last one gave me the shivers. I'm not a hop head, and this is pretty much straight hops, with some draino thrown in? Seriously, though, it's extremely bitter, very citrusy (normally I like that! not here!), and extremely bitter. Did I say it's bitter? Holy hell. If you want to have a beer just for bitterness sake, here it is.

2013 Update - My tastebuds are now more acclimated to the hops and extreme DIPAs and Imperials so I re-reviewed. Plus the 2013 vintage is just better than 2012 was.

12oz bottle dated 6/5/11, reviewed from notes taken 12/31/11. Thanks to Jesse13713 for sharing one of these with me.

A: Pours a hazy, orange-copper color with a finger of light white head.

S: A musty caramel flavor dominates here, smelling slightly like a basement. Lightly hoppy, which I expect is from the age.

T: In contrast to the smell, the hop flavors found here are very potent, and based on them I would have had no problem believing this was totally fresh. Tons of pine, along with a generous portion of citrus flavors. Heavily bitter from the hops, but the sweet malts do a good job of maintaining balance. Big bitter finish, very resiny.

M: Thick and syrupy with moderate carbonation and a lightly dry finish.

O: Enjoyed this one quite a bit; no need to hesitate if you find a slightly old bottle, but I'll be looking for a chance to try it when it's brand new too.

Review adapted from notes taken 7/27/11

Appearance: Pours thick, dark orange/amber - thin white head that doesn't leave much lacing - could look much more appealing

Smell: Absolutely bizarre and a little disturbing, like some kind of cross between weed and spaghetti sauce - dank, with onions and garlic - some serious citrus under this, as well as more herbal and floral notes - some oily pine, too - syrupy malts underneath

Taste: Indescribably bitter and over the top - extremely harsh and volatile - flavors are chaotic and borderline insane (and not really in a delicious way) - tons of citrus, citrus rind, oily pine, resin, pine cones - tons of malt, too - toasted, caramelized - the malts are so heavy and there is so much booze that this kind of tastes like a liqueur or something

Mouthfeel: Heavy, syrupy - thick with a serious alcohol bite - needs more carbonation

Overall: More of an experience than a beer

This is one of the most bizarre creations I have encountered. I expected it to be intense, but Devil Dancer is just absurd. The problem with this level of absurdity is that it inspires curiosity... While I didn't love this, I am curious to try it again.
