2012 Edition

A: Poured a half finger head that settled to a thin cap around the edge of the glass. The liquid appeared thick when pouring. Some lacing and retention already about 5 minutes into the pour. Color the beer is a reddish hued caramel.

S: Lots resinous pine backed by a waves of tropical fruit. I pick up on touches of orange and apricot. It smells sweeter than I thought it would be, but still very balanced.

T: You can tell this beer is loaded with hop resin. It is combated with burnt sugar, caramel, and toasted malt. Molasses, pineapple bundt cake, and pepper finish out the flavor. Note: the 12% ABV is expertly hidden. You will be jamming to the hop music one second, and crawling on the ground the next.

M: Mouthfeel is thick, syrupy, and luscious. Stickier than molasses, you will be licking the inside of your mouth hours later and thanking yourself. Full bodied and creamy.

O: Founders is asserting themself with this one. It blurs the line between barleywine and (T)IPA, but nevertheless it is a great brew.

Excited to pick up a four-pack of this yesterday afternoon, even when paying almost $20 bucks. Tasting for the first time.

Smells like an IPA to me. Nothing unusual on the nose.

I was curious/excited to see what a 12% alcohol, 112 IBU beer tastes like. Honestly, I am rather dissapointed. This beer tastes like... any other decent IPA. Definitely a strong herbal/earthy hops presence. I am not tasting the onion flavor that others have expressed, but I am also not sensing a floral or citrus presence which I tend to really enjoy. The alcohol is not noticeable. The intense bitterness did eventually show through, which I enjoyed.

Overall, definitely a future pass based on price point. Right off the cuff I can think of two significantly less expensive IPA's that I would prefer to drink over this beer. Was it a decent beer which was drinkable (especially for the ABV), yes. Would I recommend trying it, yes. Is it worth really searching for, no.

A- pours a blood orange yet translucent liquid with almost no head. A thin white, rice-cake head appears for a quick second but quickly vanishes.

S- sweet sugars covering grapefruit and very small hints of pine. Some booze in there as well.

T- carmelized sugar hits first with some hints of grapefruit and then an overwhelming pine crispness follows.

M- lightly carbonated but the pine lingers on the tongue like the fizz of pop rocks. A bit much for me.

O- a very nice iPa but the mouthfeel fell short for me.

Had on tap back in 2010 @ founders . Thought it was good then
2011 didn't find any .7/7/12 bought 2/4 pks. What I just tasted was like a trip to the dentist ! Novacaine. 40 degree starting temp /55 @ finish . Sorry I don't get any fruit ... May try again , but thinking now on cellering some .
Very dissapointed as hi power ipa's are my thing.
Shorts Liberator is comparable
As is Bells The Oracle
But these have way more balance , & that's funny to say Liberator has balance.

Hope it ages , cause @$20/4pk
It better

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip at cellar temperature.

L - Medium amber color with a 1-finger cream-colored bubbly head. Pretty good retention and lacing. Very few appreciable bubbles.

S - Huge hop aroma with grapefruit, peach, mango, and pineapple notes. Maybe the tiniest bit of caramel malt, but this is mostly hops for sure. A touch of alcohol shows up, too.

T - Again, tons and tons of hops. Starts with about a half a second of fruity sweetness and then plows through your palate with a bitter blast of hops with grapefruit and mango flavors. Alcohol is apparent here, too. I can’t really find the malt anywhere.

F - Medium-bodied with not much carbonation, a sticky and sharp mouthfeel, and a strongly bitter and dry finish. Fruity bitterness lingers forever along with throat-warming from the alcohol.

O - This isn’t a bad DIPA. It’s just a little too harsh and unbalanced for my liking. However, for the alcohol content and it being a “triple” IPA, it is pretty drinkable - a sipper, but drinkable. Not bad, but I expected a bit more from a Founders beer.

Served On Tap at Churchkey DC.

A: A beautiful red blood orange hue. Zero head, all Laroux "In for the Kill" Bizness!
S: Sweet hoppy malts. !0 different hops in this freakish beauty. Fragrant ruby red grapefruit, sweet cherries, and sweet hay grass.
T: What can I say but DELICIOUSNESS in a glass!! This is my favorite IPA. Its got the sweet pull of a Lagunitas Undercover shutdown ale with the lushiousness of a Firestone Double Jack. It is the best of the best! Sour mash ruby red grapefruit, red berries, orange rind, honey hop sweet grass.
Ahhh so good!

M: Thick creamy low carbonation booze tingling amazingess. So thick. So syrupy, so good!

O: This is my favorite IPA hands down. Champion style beer that isn't too much of a Palate Wreaker. Just fantastic goodness in a glass!
