Purchased at Total Wine Tampa, but, looking at the receipt, I think they over-charged me, $5.99 for a single, fuck me??...Oh well. Smells of sweaty, tropical fruit- papaya/mango and earthy spice- cardamom/allspice. Tastes super malty molasses sweet, with more tropical fruit and bitterness at the end. Overall, I would've preferred a dryer 3IPA. It's definitely a case of 'too much of a good thing.' Tastes a lot like my first homebrew.
My shot-in-the-dark hops guess: Summit/Nugget for bittering, Columbus/Cascade for flavor, Simcoe/Galaxy for Aroma. (552 characters)

Very reddish in color. My first "triple IPA" but seems if the bitterness was comparable to other IPAs I've had and not too much. Very little head on the beer and not a heavy feeling beer at all. (195 characters)

A- deep, slightly hazy copper with one finger of light tan head. Excellent head retention and consistent, attractive lacing.

S- caramel, raisins, malt extract, molasses. As it warms up, the molasses fades out and gives way to a spicy/fruity hop aroma. The alcohol is hidden well at first, but as the beer warms up a bit, it becomes bracing.

T- caramel, dried dates, herbal hops, and alcohol. Lots of alcohol. There is an astringent bitterness left on the tongue after each sip.

M- thick, heavy bodied, light carbonation. Extremely warming.

O- not my favorite. As a DIPA it's alright, it's more of an American barleywine in my opinion though. I'm on the fence with it as far as a recommendation. If you're looking for a typical DIPA, keep looking. If you're looking for a monster beer with an attitude and no regard for common sense, go for it. (863 characters)

Love the look of this TIPA. I pulled this out after aging for exactly one year after bottling date. Pours a warm reddish tea color w a thin khaki head that dissipated rather quickly. Whimpy hop smell that seemed to be shadowed by an almost sweet caramel malt scent. Tasted as such. Seems like the aging got rid of a lot of the bitterness that is associated with this beer fresh out of the brewery. Worked for me. Medium body with light carbonation. Definitely felt the high ABV but it wasn't overpowering. Overall I enjoyed it and I think that the time in my cellar helped everything balance out. Very nice. Just bought another four that will take its place for next year. (683 characters)

12oz bottle served in a pint glass
I've been saving this one for my birthday so I hope it's worth the wait.
A clear reddish dark brown in the glass with a finger or so oh light khaki head that seems to linger and laces nicely. A little light in aroma but what's there is reminiscent of a barleywine with a lot of hop character, mostly resins and pine along with some general sweetness. So much bitterness in the taste that it is almost hard to describe. Not a whole lot of hop flavor but you're hit with layers of sticky hoppy bitterness that starts at the tip of the tongue and lasts a long time in the finish. Obviously there is a significant amount of malty sweetness to balance it that tends to be largely in the caramel realm. Medium bodied with low to moderate carbonation the alcohol is very noticeable especially as the beer warms a bit. A bit too hot and a touch too bitter without enough of the hop flavor I'm looking for in order to make this a drinkable beer and overall it falls just a bit short of some other examples of the style for those reasons. (1,072 characters)

Pours a deep orange, almost red color with a nice white head that lasts and lasts. The smell was very heavy with pine first and then sweeter scents such as toffee and caramel coming through. The taste was very heavy with a lot of flavors of hops coming through then giving way to the sweeter malt. The alcohol burned well on the finish. Overall I liked it and am aging the rest of my four pack to see what a bit of time will do. (428 characters)

Bottled one month ago. Very nice crimson color, 2 finger tan head. Smell is sweet malts, surprising lack of citrus or heavy hops. Very syrupy sweet, overly cloying, almost a molasses feel. Then the bitterness comes in. Not a great hop flavor just sweet and bitter. Worth trying but I'm glad I only bought one (308 characters)

Awesome balance of orange peel and hops on the nose! For 112ibu's its incredibly smooth. Both releases I've enjoyed have been consistent overall. Definitely worth seeking this Devilishly delightful Triple IPA (208 characters)

Poured into large wine goblet.
Nice color. Nose a bit too strong.
Great taste. Not as heavy as I thought it would be, but it definitely provides the booze in taste and effect.

Perfect afternoon beer for the last day at home alone before your wife starts summer break. (269 characters)

Pours a deep, reddish gold with minimal head and lacing. Aroma is malty sweetness, booze, some caramel and a slight medicine smell. Taste is strong hop bitterness(112IBUS) with some caramel malt, a touch of peach and a medicinal taste. Loads of hop bitterness that linger quite a lot after the beer is gone. Overall, a decent TIPA, and coming from a hop fan, this one s just a touch over the top... (398 characters)

amber, thin head with some lacing. nose is boozy hops and a faint medicinal cherry (especially after it settles). i never expected to find an imperial ipa that was "just too much", but here we are. taste is an alcoholic malt massacre with discernible caramel sweetness. whatever complexities are involved here are simply overshadowed and smote out by the bravado of this 12% abv effort. amazingly bitter aftertaste; the entire mouth and palate are left coated with an almost fruit-seed astringency. i love extremely bitter and hoppy beers (ruination, etc) but this one takes the cake and ruins the sheets with it. this brew was obviously intended as a showpiece, so one 12oz bottle would make a great sampler for 2-3 people. (731 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a teku glass
A: Burnt orange with a one-finger head
S: Lots of hops, particularly pine and tropical fruit but also citrus and a bit of earth
T: Matches the nose. Definitely very hoppy, though the different qualities the hops bring are balanced
M: Big. A touch boozy, fairly bitter
O: This definitely packs in the hops. Almost a bit much, but it's tasty. I also feel I should note that over $5 for a 12oz bottle seems a bit much hence knocking it down a bit from the overall average (506 characters)

Drinking this one only a month after bottling. I bought the 4-pack and have every intention of aging a couple of them.

The first scent is a pleasant, fruity one, that doesn't give any warning of the triple IPA heavy ABV beer bomb within. Some stone fruit odors and a hint of bubblegum.

The taste hits hard, though maybe less hard than expected. I had some when it was only 2 weeks old, but just a small sample, and that seemed stronger. Could it have mellowed out significantly over only 2 weeks? Or am I just remembering wrong? Either way, nicely balanced hops and malts, with the bitter flavor only appearing at the finish. The 112 IBUs advertised seems like an overstatement.

Carbonation stays moderate, but on the thin side. Slightly murky reddish orange color, which also makes it a good deal lighter in color than one would expect from a triple IPA.

Overall, a genuinely tasty brew, and while it's a bit expensive, the strength alone makes it worth the price, to say nothing of the quality that I expect from Founders. (1,036 characters)

Pours a clear amber red with a inch and a half thick off white head. Smell of grapefruit, spice, tons of grassy hops, a good amount of bready malt, and a bit of earth. Taste of alcohol, grapefruit, citrus, grassy earthy hops, nice sweet caramel malt, and tons of bitter. It has a moderate mouth feel with a creamy yet crisp taste. (330 characters)

Not too shabby. Goes down smooth for 12%abv. Nice color and smell. Not in my top 5 (although founder's breakfast stout always will be) but it's a pretty good triple. (165 characters)

Look - Burn orange almost red color. Very appetizing. Medium tan head with medium sized bubbles. No retention.

Smell - Alcohol. Malt. Bread. Dank. Spicy.

Taste - Alcohol and grapefruit/fruits up front. Caramel. Smell translates to taste. Almost a triple to taste.

Feel - Creamy/syrupy but light bodied? Doesn't explode with carbonation.

Overall - It reminds me of Double Crooked Tree. I tried it as soon as soon as it arrived in Columbus. (445 characters)

I love the color and overall look of this one. However it isn't as balanced as I'd like. It's a hop monster - bitter as can be. It's good, but there are other triples I greatly prefer. (187 characters)

I've come to expect so much from Founders which I think is why this one left me a little disappointed. Was very good, nice color and aroma - great taste. Just not up to CBS, KBS, Breakfast Stout or Imperial Stout. Still a fine brew. (234 characters)

Poured cold into a tulip glass; Bottled with a month and a half.
Look = 4.0 Pours a clear, deep mahogany color with red highlights and 4 fingers of light brown head composed of bigger bubbles and fades to ring before disappearing entirely. Decent lace and a nice color.
Aroma = 4.0 Hop forward, kind of spice hops, earthy and piney. Alcohol is prominent in the nose as is the caramel malty sweetness.
Taste = 3.75 Hoppy but very sweet too; piney bitterness with caramel and toffee sweetness, a significant bitter finish. Alcohol is clear too, packs a punch.
Feel = 4.25 Medium to full bodied with light to medium carbonation; thick, syrupy and a substantial resiny feel
Drinkability = 3.5 Big, boozy and bitter.
Overall = 3.9 A much better showing here than when I reviewed it last year; guess I knew what to expect better and appreciated it for what it was more. (863 characters)

Very strong. It's a real sipper. Very malty in the front, with a strong oakiness. Doesn't feel like an IPA, then again, I've had very few triples, so maybe I don't know what to expect. 7/10 would bang. (201 characters)

From 12 oz bottle in a craft beer glass and on tap at Muddy Waters and the Bryant Lake Bowl.
A: Reddish amber with slight haze, not much head S: Malt, spice and some fig on the nose.
T: A lot of spicy hop flavor, some cola, dark sugars, citrus. Faint hint of tobacco and anise. Bitterness is rounded and not harsh.
F: Medium low carbonation, medium high to chewy body. Warming
O: The hops are big in this beer but it has the alcohol and the malt to balance things out. (472 characters)

The best so called "triple" IPA I've had to date
Kinda like a super hoppy barley wine you can taste the 112 Ibus but its perfectly matched by the absurd amounts of malt (168 characters)
