750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled in 11/2015. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, maple, toffee, vanilla, toasted oak, coconut, bourbon, light smoke, and roast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, dark/roasted malt, and maple bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, maple, toffee, vanilla, toasted oak, bourbon, coconut, light smoke, and roast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate pine/roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus/tropical hops, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, maple, toffee, vanilla, toasted oak, bourbon, coconut, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, dark/roasted malt, and maple bourbon barrel flavors; with a great bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged Black IPA style. All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, dark/roasted malt, and maple bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours deep brown in color with a one-finger creamy khaki head that has good retention

S- smells of roasted barley, faded hops, pine, frosted berries, char, maple, toasted oak, bourbon

T- initially sweet with the maple coming through, immediately followed by equal parts charred malt and faded citrusy hops. Mid-palate brings out notes of black licorice candy, caramel & pine. The finish gives light oaky bourbon and more maple and licorice on the linger

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns into a creamy finish

O- interested flavors throughout, but they never seem to quite mesh

Bottled late 2015; drank 12/19/15 @ the Palace.

Opaque dark brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a big khaki head; strong lace.

Oak, bacon jam & sweet bourbon notes in the nose.

Thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Sweet bourbon, oak & candied bacon flavors; strong booze heat notes on the finish.

Cloying & boozy; not a great combination.

I’m not sure what it was like fresh but it’s great aged, poured on 12/16/17 and it was like drinking a malty, balanced stout. No taste of maple or hops, but good malt flavor.
