i've had KBS '10 and '11 on tap, and '11 in bottles. overall, they're similar - a perfect breakfast stout with delicious bourbon. '11 is much hotter than '10, but not in a bad way. it's hot in the same way Rare BCBS is - in a delicious enjoyable way that lends the beer to sipping. this remains one of my stalwart favorite beers, and something i will look forward to yearly. the oatmeal/coffee/chocolate work so perfectly with the bourbon.

Had the 2014 release for the first time. Wouldn't say I was disappointed, but I was surprised. Surprised that it tasted exactly like the regular breakfast stout, which isn't a bad thing, just expected it to be a different animal. I smell the bourbon, but it doesn't come through in the taste all that much. I think the coffee cancels it out a little. I do like it more as it warms. I read someones post about unnecessarily barrel aging great beers. At the time, I didn't agree/understand (I usually say age anything and everything) but now I think I do. Breakfast stout didn't need any improvement and I don't think that aging this flavor profile made it any better. Dont get me wrong, it is still an exceptional brew that lives up to much of the hype and prestige. If I was rating on that aspect alone I would be between 4.25 and 4.50. I rated based as if grabbing off the shelf or blind tasting. There are better versions of this style in my opinion (Black Note).
