Bought a single of this from Vintner Wine Market; poured her into a nice, tapered pilsener glass from Crate & Barrel. Only the good stuff at my dad's house. (!)
The beer's color surprised me a bit. My rationale's based on the experience I've had with other American IPAs, and this one seemed a lot lighter and watered-down than most that I've had. But I have a bit of a problem with this category: I think twenty percent is a bit too much weight for something as trivial and as irrelevant as appearance. I mean, we don't judge people by the way they look right? Beers should go without saying. Yet the category counts for a fifth of the overall score. Brothers Alstrom (sans umlaut...I'm sorry), if you're reading this, I think smell should be bumped to 30% and appearance should be demoted to 10%..."just my .02," as many say. At any rate: A decent-sized pure white head helps it here...but it just doesn't LOOK so good.
The beer smells extremely hoppy, but its complexity stops there. In other words, all I smell is hops. I guess for many people, this would be extremely positive. But I look for a little more complexity in my IPAs, and Harvest Ale isn't too hard to decipher.
The taste is much of the same. Hoppy, to be sure, but it lacks any sort of...anything else. Tinges of fruit. Malt? Maybe? The bottle's showing 70 IBUs and the bottling date is 9/29/10, but it's pretty darn mellow. I guess I can qualify this, in a way: I was sipping a Blowing Rock IPA prior to consuming this, so that might have some bearing on the (lack of) taste. However, that beer only registered at 60 IBUs, and it was blowing the pants off of this Harvest Ale.
Mouthfeel: Whatever. It's an IPA. If you know me, you know this is pretty much an automatic four if an IPA is truly falling within it's category.
Definitely drinkable, but at the cost? Two Hearted beats the pants off this stuff. Founders had me at KBS, but I may be calling BS on this stuff, and I'm not talking Breakfast Stout. Yeah yeah, that's way too harsh, but it sounded pretty cool, right?
Okay. I've got a cold; I have another IPA on the palate; I'm getting pretty sleepy. All of these certainly aren't working in Harvest Ale's favor. But it's a Founders product. KBS provided me first wet beer dream before I even knew my tastebuds could feel that way. So I give it minor sympathy points. Plus, it's a solid IPA. But there are MANY east coast IPAs that would take this beer into a dark alley and commit unspeakable acts upon it. That's all I'll say.
