Pours orange-red, crystal clear with a hint of head and a huge staining slop of hops resin lacing the glass.
Nose is a wonderland of tropical fruits: pineapple yields to papaya and unripe guava, ending with paw-paw or chermoya fruit. Pine too. All crystal clear, with no muddiness or dullness. I couldn't find even a hint of malt in the smell.
Taste is, well, wow, it rips through the palate and then dries leaving long, slow biting bitterness. Tea astringency and resins, some tannins, and overall warming. Finishes long and the bitterness unfurls, drying the mouth, but it doesn't burn or sting like some of the crazier hop bombs. No real discernable malt to balance, but it's not unbalanced either. Clearly something is there: just not discernibly as sweetness or as malt body.
I stlll wish I hadn't missed the keg at Black Sparrow. Thanks to the beer guy at Whole Foods in Indianapolis for bestowing the four pack he had on a latecomer to the Founders Harvest Ale party.
