Enjoyed out of a 12 oz brown bottle stamped with a bottling date of 10/3/2013. Poured into the IPA-specific Spiegelau glass from SN/DFH.

Appearance - Pours a jewel-like rich amber hue with highlights of yellow sun and darker shadows of golden-orange. Created by the laser etching on the bottom of the glass, a steady stream of carbonation bubbles rises up to a rocky two finger head. Head immediately starts to dissipate, but slowly, revealing a web of bursting bubbles, and sticky but sparse lacing. The color is bone white.

Smell - Fresh cut grass, light pine resin, honeysuckle and orange peel shavings all come through, but are not to be outdone by a healthy graham cracker-like base from the grain bill. It's not quite as intoxicatingly aromatic as some fresh-hop ales I've sampled, but it has that distinct forward pungency.

Taste - White grapefruit, citrus zest, bitter garden greens and even some hints of seared brussels sprouts and other pleasant vegetal qualities. Some earthy notes are also present, like peat moss, as well as the continued presence of malts, this time taking on a toasted sourdough characteristic. Lingering mild bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel - Luscious, medium-bodied mouthfeel, with carbonation on the high side of moderate. Juicy in feel, in spite of the flavor profiles being more herbal/earthy in nature. Very drinkable.

Overall, a wonderfully tasty beer, but not one I'm sure quite lives up to the comparatively increased effort it takes to get this one compared to say, Red's Rye, FBS, Founders Porter, etc. I'm actually pretty excited to see how my perception of the beer changes, if at all, as I work my way through the rest of the 4-pack.

I've drank many, many craft brews but this is my first time reviewing one. Finding a new favorite beer gives me the same feeling as finding a great new golf course. Without diving into a bunch of minute specifics and details the overall big picture is that Founders Harvest Ale is a great beer. And after drinking it I felt like I just had a great experience. Very fresh tasting. Unique. Everything I want in a beer is present and nothing is overdone.
I have been frustrated frequently by not being able to find certain beers, so after initially buying a 4-pack I went back to the store and bought their remaining three 4-packs.
Thank you Founders. Keep up the good work!
