Bottled 12/20/12. Reviewed on 1/14/2013. So a little less than a month old.
A: Thick, viscous, tar black with a frothy, bubbly, medium brown head. Huge lace and awesome retention.
S: Huge dark chocolate aromas. Big roasted malt, charred wood, and some dark coffee/espresso. A bit of sweet booze.
T: Like the nose, big bittersweet chocolate flavors. Rich, dark, and creamy. Roasted malt and some smoke and wood show themselves in the second layer. Some booze and sweet, caramelized sugar. I get some of the hops and bitterness. Not cloying. Seriously awesome.
M: Way too smooth, massive flavor, and balanced.
O: Such a pleasure to drink. Roasty, bitter, chocolaty goodness. Lives up to the hype and expectations.
Second bottle from the bottling date of 12/20/12...reviewed on 12/30/13...so a little more than a year old!
Gorgeous beer. Seriously. Wow. Deep brown, luscious head. Dark, robust aromas of black strap molasses, the darkest and richest chocolate you can imagine, and freshly roasted malt that you scoop up with your hands and shove into your nose. So mellowed out with flavor that's just off the charts. Unbelievable, really. Insane amounts of roasted and charred malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar. And a delicious and welcome complement of warming booze. Incredible body with perfect carbonation. Drinkability is absurd! I could drink this all night (and regret it the next morning). Had to bump it up from a straight 4.5! This was incredible fresh but with some age on it, this beer just shines. Simple as that.
