Thanks to Momar42 for the bottle! 12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
A: Pours an ultra-viscous looking pitch black color. It's an amazingly heavy looking monster. The head is a one-finger dark tan color with fantastic texturing. Retention isn't perfect, but the level of lacing is downright beautiful. It just looks amazing.
S: Wow, this is one of the most chocolaty-smelling imperial stouts I've ever encountered. There are also notes of hazelnut, cream, vanilla, roasted malts, coffee, and slight dark fruit. No frills, but fuckin' fantastic regardless.
T: It seems like Founders took the basic essence of a standard-issue RIS and distilled it into rapturous glory. I first notice flavors of cream, vanilla, and chocolate; before roasted malts envelop the tastebuds. The umami qualities on the finish are glorious, melding together with anise, tobacco, and pine flavors. It has just enough complexity to keep the palate guessing, while being simple enough that one can easily pick out the differing handful of flavors. Yum.
M: You wouldn't expect such a thick, creamy monster to be so drinkable - but the delicately dry finish and brilliant alcohol concealment means this will be all gone before you know what to do. It's not so dry as to render its aftertaste gutted, however; some syrupy linger remains without creating overpowering sweetness. One of the best RIS palate feels I've ever encountered outside of Nogne O's RIS.
O: Founders didn't reinvent the wheel, they just showed every other brewer how it should be made in the first place. A brilliant reminder why this is my favorite style out there, and a not-so-brilliant reminder that this was the only bottle I had. :(

This handsome looking beer was systematically poured into a brandy snifter. The almost non-existent, beige, and wispy head quickly retreated to the boundaries of it's temporary confinement. With a twirl of the glass I can see the minimal head leave fine, smooth, slick, and slippery legs. They make the side of the glass melt. The body of this manly looking stout is solid black. When held up to the sun, no light can penetrate the dense, thick liquid.
The aroma is rich and creamy. The smell of the roasted malted barely, vanilla, and lactose, make me wish this beer would warm up more quickly. After a few more deep inhalations, I can faintly smell some background alcohol.
For me, the taste is rich and complex. It makes a very deep run at your tastebuds. There is quite a bit of rich, roasted flavor up front. This stout also gives you a brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, and bitter + sweet flavor. The taste is intense on my palate and the alcohol is disguised very well. There is a barely noticeable amount of heat.
Mouthfeel is velvety and smooth. There is medium carbonation and some viscosity. The medium and dense carb is chewy.
For me this stout is robust and savory. This reminds me of Ten Fidy. I do not think I would be able to tell you which is better. I probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart in a blind taste test. I really like this stout. Good stuff and highly recommended.
