Purchased a solo from Sicilliano's Market.
A - Pitch black, and syrupy. A thin line of creamy brownish head. Nice lacing.
S - Chocolate, malts, coffee, vanilla beans, licorice. A much nicer aroma on this on the second try almost a year removed from the first time I tried this.
T - Chocolate, big malty flavor, warming alcohol, but finishes with an extremely dry bitter anise flavor. Full bodied mouthfeel - syrupy.
O - I had a much better experience this time around. I found it was best to enjoy this beer at near room temp (as suggested by BA). I have to say that any style of brew that is heavily laden with anise flavors is hard for me to get my palate around so although this is a finely crafted brew, I don't think I'll be going back.
Re - Review - almost two years later. I tried this in the tap house and didn't like it, tried it a year a later and enjoyed (but didn't love) it. Now I'm drinking this one with about a year and 2 months age on it and it is a work of art. The anise has mellowed, the chocolate, and layers of cocoa, coffee, vanilla, come out in full force. The layers of flavor and depth to this is amazing. I'm going to continue to buy these in waves and throw them in the cellar. Simply amazing brew.
