Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Westmalle chalice. No freshness date.
Appearance: Simply put, pitch black. It really takes a hard pour to get any head on this. A quarter inch of dark, extremely dense light chocolate colored head appears, and sticks around for several minutes. Only the slightest but of dark chestnut brown appears around the edges. The head fades to a thick, very thin layer.
Smell: Very surprised here, this beer almost smells like a barley wine. Overall, lots of lightly toasted malts, followed by a nice pleasant sweetness. A little brown sugar, a little molasses, and a touch of unsweetened cocoa. An extremely satisfying bourbon aroma comes out after some time.
Taste: Excellent roasted flavors. Malts, malts, and more malts. A faint, sweet, milk chocolate fights its way through. A slight bitterness at the end, accompanied by some alcohol burn. The dark chocolate/unsweetened cocoa really comes out the more this beer warms.
Mouthfeel: Heavy body, low carbonation, just the way I like it. The body is very smooth, but not too heavy to the point where it is chewy. The carbonation level is low, but not off putting. Great constancy in the body, in the carbonation, all the way around.
Overall: Yet another home run from Founder's. The flavors in this beer really mesh. At 10.5% ABV, this beer is scary drinkable, and it is all but nonexistent, with only a faint hint of alcohol burn. I can't put this beer down.

Notes from 7/27/14 - Served in a Snifter
A: 1/2 inch of thick, hot-cocoa colored head; solid lacing. Thick, rich, black body.
S: Sweet, rich milk chocolate. Touch of coffee and booze. More roasted coffee as it warms.
T: Sweet milk chocolate, followed by mild roasted coffee. Slight medicinal booziness. Finishes with deep, bitter coffee beans.
M: Thick, almost shake-like, with low carbonation. Heavy on the tongue and coats mouth nicely. Slightly sticky finish.
O: Excellent brew that's relatively easy to find and affordable. One of my favorite Imperial Stouts.
