This beer pours an oily, opaque black with a small amount of dark tan head. Not too much lacing going on, head fades pretty quick. Definitely passes the opaque test though.

On the nose I can pick up on an almost sweet caramel/toffee/butterscotch note. Little bit of chocolate too. Doesn't really smell like an imperial stout, but its got a real nice syrupy kind of thing going on.

Flavor wise, theres a sweet and subtle start, it finishes with a kind of bitter, smokey aftertaste, not very hoppy. Not boozy at all, really well blended.

Mouthfeel is just like you would expect, thick and syrupy, nice and smooth, low level of carbonation too.

Overall, excellent imperial stout.

Poured the beer, thick like molasses and oh so dark black in color, into a snifter around 55-60 degrees. Everything quickly got better as the beer approached room temperature. Beautiful mocha colored 1/2inch thick head that did quickly retreat with some lacing. The aroma was quite alluring with hints of chocolate, toffee, maybe roast, and some hints of vanilla. Taste was to die for; coffee, fudge, bittersweet chocolate, and fruits. Thick and smooth with a velvet creamy mouthfeel on the palate. Founders, again, has impressed me with one of their brews. Truly one of the best imperial stouts out there; in my opinion. Highly recommend this one!

12 oz. bottle, with bottled on date 12/27/2013 printed on the bottleneck. I am somehow just now finally getting around to reviewing this staple beer from Founders. Expectations are very nice.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a ridiculously thick solid opaque black with about an eighth of an inch of dark chocolate bubbles for a head. Thin ring of bubbles. One of the darkest thickest beers I've ever seen.

S - Smell is lovingly crafted and complex. Boozy alcohol heat, big fudgey chocolate, dark barley roast, cream, hitns of vanilla, & very dark boozy fruitiness - raisins, plums, black currants.

T - Taste follows the nose - bittersweet dark chocolate / cocoa / fudge, vanilla, dark bitter coffee bean roast, and dark boozy fruits. Intense bitterness, as was expected per the 90 IBUs.

M - Feel is smooth and silky. Lots of dark coffee bean bitterness / dark barley roast on the palate. Full-bodied with perfect carbonation.

Overall, an excellent imperial stout. I would love to see what some age would do to one of these bottles. Alcohol is noticeable, but you would never know it was 10.50% abv. Sticky, fudgey, and dessert-ish, but I suppose it would make for a nice breakfast beer if the occasion called for it. Recommended.

2011 bottle into snifter glass

A: pours thick, viscous, almost like chocolate syrup. No head on this, just a thin lacing around the rim.

S: roast, chocolate, coffee, booze, awesome.

T: follows the smell. Lots of complexity in the favors and everything works together really well. No discernible alcohol taste in this 2011 vintage. It's very smooth.

M: very thick and creamy as a stout should be. Perfect mouthfeel.

O: very good stout. I would have this over FBS any day.
