A - Black. Tar. Old motor oil. Not a bit of light passes through. Barely noticeable head. The little that I had was dark brown.

S - Noticeable coffee, and a bit of chocolate. Roasted malts.

T - Dark roasted coffee/espresso is the first thing that hits my palate. Lots of roasted malt up front, and a slight bitterness of the hops. Exactly what I would expect. I taste the bitterness of coffee and a bit chocolate in the aftertaste. The 10.5% ABV is hidden very well. Well balanced taste.

M - Very smooth, while being full bodied. Definitely sticks to the mouth. Little carbonation.

O - Always a pleasure drinking this beer. I've always thought this was one of the better Imperial Stout's I've had. Very well balanced, and no noticeable booze. A good sipper on a cold, winter night.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Firestone Walker snifter glass.

A: Essentially black and opaque, with a thin tan ring of foam and no visible carbonation.

S: Coffee, cacao, tobacco, leather, and a nice roasted sweetness.

T: Coffee, roasted green peppers, a bit of dark spices, a drying tobacco flavor, musty leather, and a touch of dark cacao near the end. Some bitterness sticks around at the end - I suspect a combination of roasted malts and hop bitterness. Though I'm not sure I would have picked it out as hops if the label hadn't proclaimed "90 IBUs".

M: Body is on the thin side for style, but not distractingly so. Moderate alcohol presence and low carbonation sensation but I would consider it acceptable for style.

O: This was really tasty. As I feel like I say about so many of the Founders' 12 oz. offerings - it's not as good as the best in class, but for a beer that sees wide distribution and I can pick up off the shelf in a four-pack, it's very well-done.

Appearance- Pours thick and pitch black with a small tan head that recedes quickly and leaves minimal lacing.

Smell- I get some vanilla and coffee with a background of milk chocolate and caramel. Very sweet smell, almost like French vanilla coffee with a bit of espresso in the back, very nice.

Taste-Can definitely taste the 90 IBU's. First sip is burnt toast and espresso. As it warms the bitterness subsides a little and gives way to notes of chocolate, licorice and some flavors of burnt caramel. I like the flavor but the bitterness and burnt toast take away from the other characteristics

Mouthfeel- Very full bodied and creamy. I like the mouthfeel but again the bitterness is quite drying on the back end.

Overall- Pretty good Imperial stout. Nice flavors, smell and body. I definitely recommend letting it warm up to help diminish some of the bitterness.
