Review #400. Live.

Pours a dark black and beautiful opaque, with a finger of light brown head that ends up as a nice skim, and leaves oily lace on the glass.

Not a strong smell, but it is full on bitter hop, bitter roast, bitter chocolate, and milk chocolate. Just a hint of lighter roast, caramel, and spicy alcohol.

Woahhh, full on mouth attack of the bitter elements in dark roast malt, and high alpha hop.It starts the slightest bit sweet, with alcohol grabbing bitter chocolate, deep bitter roast, smooth burnt caramel, and ends with some drying pine and spicy alcohol battling for control of a clean and dry finish.

Not as thick as the finest RIS, nicely low carb., not complex in the finish, but leaves a clean and lasting dry cling that begs for more.

What a great beer. If not for the numerous super fantastic offerings in this style this would be the best. Delicious, and highly recommended.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter.

A: Pours a very dark brown that blackens up. Beautiful cascade builds up a one-finger mocha head with medium retention. Light doesn't get through at all. Foamy, copious lacing.

S: Chocolate milk shake. Cocoa, coffee, and some vanilla. Fairly strong and nice and rich. A bit boozy at the end.

T: Wow. Dark, dark, dark chocolate rounds its way into a smoky, vanilla-flavored coffee. Ends with quite a bit of bitterness; an almost herb-like astringency. I might want to let this cellar and mellow out before trying it again - the bitterness is a tad overwhelming and tar-like, although still enjoyable. A little mellowing could quite possibly bring this to a 5.0.

M: Almost perfect. Starts thick and syrupy, better than just about anything out there. Unfortunately, it doesn't end with the milky foaminess I love so much from other stouts. Perhaps a tad low on the carbonation. Some welcome alcohol.

O: A great stout. I've got another in the fridge that I'm pretty sure I'm going to cellar. This is a great beer with all the elements I look for in a stout, with a little extra hop attitude. Very excited to try again in a few months.

I went into this draft hoping that this RIS could live up to the Stone and Old Rasputins of the world, and I was not disappointed.

It poured jet black with a half an inch creamy head. Smell was toasted malt with just the slightest whisper of licorice. The first sip said it all, smooth as silk with a mouthfeel that other stouts dream of. Each subsequent sip seemed to trump the previous one.

I've previously had Founders breakfast stout and although a great stout, I was not a huge fan of the overwhelming chocolate and coffee in FBS. For a stout purist like me, this RIS is far superior and is worth a try if you can get your hands on some. It's very tempting to order a second one, but at 10.5% you have to be cautious.

Bottled Dec 2011.

A nice looking stout; could use a little more head but the rest is right where an imperial stout should be. Aroma nails the style: strongly roasted malts, bitter coffee, hints of chocolate.

Taste is straightforward: they saved the complexity for their Breakfast Stout variants while proving they could brew a magnificent RIS base base. Tons of roasted malts and bitter coffee mix perfectly with the booze character to create a pleasant sensation of alcoholic warmth as it descends.

Another home run from the crew at Founders! A shining example of how to nail the RIS style on a macro scale.

12oz bottle (bottled 12/15/2011) into a snifter. Pours opaque jet black w/ a deep, reddish mocha head that sticks around. Really great looking imperial stout.

Aroma is chocolate & roasted malt; nice and earthy.

Taste is a really great balance of deep dark roasted malt and bitter hops, a little licorice and chocolate.

Mouthfeel is just right. Smooth, clean, bone dry.

Overall wow. Just a great imperial stout, up there w/ some of my other favorite non-barrel-aged versions - Expedition and Yeti come to mind.
