Poured from a 12oz bottle into a snifter. 2011 vintage. Thanks to redbird!

This beer pours out black, with next to no head. The aroma is full and roasty, with loads of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and a bit of tops. The taste is over-the-top roasty at first, with some dark fruits. There's also a decently large dose of earthy hops at the end. The late finish yields a great coffee flavor. The mouthfeel is slick, with a slightly lighter body than expected. Overall, this is a great imperial stout. It really doesn't do anything out of the ordinary - so it makes a great benchmark stout.

Review for a bottle that once I removed the cap I saw the old twist off cap style bottle. (Courtesy of HimerMan.) Must be at least 3 or 4 years old because I believe they changed bottles a decent time ago.

Pours a thick, dark, opaque liquid, reminiscent of Hershey's syrup in color with a super tiny head that is nutty in color that immediately dissipates. Carbonation is super low but I am guessing that is because of the age factor.

Aromas begin very sweet and caramelly to the start, fading into a calming alcohol presence. Hints of dark, unsweetened chocolate and a subtle whiff of coffee. Zero no hop presence and an emerging soy sauce molasses astringency that can only come from a super old beer.

The initial taste first brings a cornucopia of flavor to the palate all at once. Bitter dark chocolate, milk chocolate, bitter coffee and a that odd astringent twang I got in the aroma. Aged hops, doubt it. Must be the super oxidated dark malts creating a slight stale coffee grinds, soy sauce astringency.

The mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied with medium to low carbonation. Finish is super syrupy and neither to sweet or too dry.

Overall this is a super complex beer that I believe this vintage I possess is slightly passed it's prime. Too much sweetness and deteriorated dark malt soy sauces flavors. Not sure how this is fresh but this is a testament to not waiting too long.

12oz bottle into goblet.

A - Midnight black with a small dark tan head.

S - Light aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate.

T - Sweet dark chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt throughout. Earthy, bitter hops quickly creep in, lending balance. Ends with a short, mildly bitter smoky finish.

M - Very smooth, medium-full body, semi dry finish. Low carbonation.

O - A very nice imperial stout. Rich in flavor, this is a beer to savor. The alcohol is especially well masked. Another great brew from Founders.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into a Yazoo imperial pint glass. Bottled on 12/22/2011.

A: Wow. It's SO dark, even for a stout. It's jet black and completely opaque. There's almost no head to speak of - even with a pretty vigarous pour, it looks flat. No lacing, but some pretty serious alcohol legs. This is obviously a stout taken to the extreme.

S: Chocolate. Brown sugar. Cinnamon. Charred wood. Sweet cream. It almost smells like a marshmallow! This is an aggressively hopped stout, but there's no real hop note on the nose. It's very sweet and very inviting.

T: My first impression is of dark chocolate and nice roasted malt. A bitter-sweetness then envelops the taste buds that reminds me so much of chocolate mousse. Finally, the hops hit the back of the tongue and bring a resinous bitter note through. Very balanced and very enjoyable.

M: The body is full and viscous with a very light amount of carbonation. The beer coats your entire mouth with a creamy smoothness that lets the flavor linger. There's a bit of alcohol burn in the back of the throat.

O: This is definitely a beer to take your time with. It really opens up as it warms and the flavor is so balanced between sweet and roasted. It's not nearly as bitter as I thought it would be. This is one of my new favorite stouts.

A- Almost black liquid topped with a thin tan head. The head fades quickly to a ring, but it leaves almost no lace on the glass.

S- Roast coffee, chocolate, toffee, and a hint of hops are the dominate notes.

T- Semisweet chocolate at first, that is soon displaced with a note of coffee bitterness that soon fades to the bone dry finish with a hint of hop bitterness to close things out.

M- Full bodied and creamy smooth, almost no carbonation. This has a nice silky feeling on the palate.

O- A nice sipper, the 10.5% ABV is well hidden and I would not have put it at being that high. A solid RIS, not an overly complex one, but on the mark for what is should be.
