I poured a bottle into a snifter.

Appearance- Utterly black with a fingers worth of dark tan head. Lots of sticky lacing.

Smell- Roasted malt and coffee with tiny hints of chocolate.

Taste- Good roasted malt flavor with a burnt coffee and bitter hop aftertaste.

Mouthfeel- Full bodied with a creamy feel. Not much carbonation.

Overall- This is one of the better imperial stouts that I have tried. A good sipping beer for a cold night.

2009 vintage from the Brick Store Pub cellar in Decatur.

Appearance: Pours a standard imperial stout pitch black color.

Smell: Smells of alcohol, chocolate, and licorice.

Taste - Smooth and chocolatey…so good. Just warming, not any alcohol in the taste. The only thing I don't really like it the slight licorice taste (just don't like any licorice taste in my beers in general) but it's not overpowering.

Mouthfeel: Feels creamy and thick like your usual imperial stout.

Overall: My first aged beer on my 22nd birthday and it was very good. Not as good as FBS, still great on it's own if you try not to compare them.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter at room temperature.

A- Pours pitch black with a nice fingers worth of caramel colored head. Lots of lacing along the side of the glass.

S- Most notable is the strong coffee aroma. I also get lots of roasty malt notes, as well as bits of chocolate. A little bit of alcohol sting is in on the smell, but not much.

T- Really nice stuff. Up front is a roasty and coffee like taste, similar to the smell. I get some hints of chocolate and maybe some vanilla also. The 90 IBUs are notable also, with some hoppy presence to finish out each sip.

M- Thick, chewy, a great sipper. An easy drinker for 10.5%ABV, as the alcohol is well masked within the taste.

Another great beer from Founders, and reasonably priced for a 4-pack. I’m planning on sitting a bottle or two down to see how it develops.

Another great beer from the Top Hundred Beers of Fame. Thanks to woodchopper for sending four of these beauties in a trade. Pours a dense black color with a small incredibly dark tan head (Ten Fidy color head). Full head retention is average but a covering remains on the glass throughout. Average lacing.

Smell is strong and very good. Roasted malts, sweet malts and a vanilla / vinuous aroma as well.

Taste is very good. Rich maltiness, a port wine like flavor (but not harsh like Le Coq) and some coffee in the finish.

Mouthfeel is incredibly rich and smooth. A bit more carbonation would be nice. Alcohol provides a warmingeffect but no harsh alcohol presence.

Overall outstanding, a great sipping beer for a cold night. If I started early enough, two would be nice!!!!

Served on tap at the Black Squirrel in ADMO, DC.

A: Pours charcoal black with a two finger dark chocolate mocha head. The head disappears quick.. good beer, good beer.
S: Straight up dark vanilla malts, dark burnt bourbon barrel. Dark black cherry mild Costa Rican roast with caramel and green banana peel.
T: The alcohol and in stringent black burnt coffee starts it off strong and lingers on for a long time on the palate. Charcoal black cherries. 90 percent dark African cocoa. Very strong malt backbone that smacks you is thorough throughout.
M: This is a high carbo swisher that mellows on the tongue.
The tingle is immense. Not for the faint of heart. Nice bourbon barrel heat burn.
O: A really strong punch in the mouth imperial stout that is dead serious in character and appearance. A slow sipper that could be a two and out.

Pours near black with a light tan head. Leaves a fair amount of lacing on the glass with good legs. The scent is all dark roasted malt and coffee with just a hint of cocoa. The taste follows the scent with a striking bitterness due to a tremendous amount of hops. Not as smooth as Founders Porter or Breakfast stout it is a good Imperial stout.

Pours black with thin tan head in Stone IRS tulip. Lots of lacing considering such a small head.

Smell is heavy with dark chocolate and coffee.

Taste is nice toasted malt and dark chocolate. Good coffee flavor in aftertaste. Much better than Breakfast Stout.
Mouthfeel is very rich and creamy. Full bodied. Not a lot of carbonation.

Overall this is a pleasant sipper.

A: Pours an opaque black with a thin tan mousse.

S: Aromas of black cherry, black currant, dark chocolate, roasted grain, coffee, and alcohol assault the nose. Very intense.

T: Notes of black cherry, black currant, prune, dark chocolate, roasted grain, coffee, heavy cream, vanilla bean, alcohol, spiced apple, and herbal, slightly resinous hops wash across the palate. The finish is bitter and long with chocolate, coffee, and herbal hop flavors underscored by alcohol.

M: This ale is full-bodied, smooth, and velvety. Carbonation is delicate, expressive, and unobtrusive. Alcohol presence is pronounced, but not overpowering.

O: This is a fantastic imperial stout, one that deftly balances heavy hopping with gorgeous dark malt flavors. Compared to many other hoppy stouts, this effort from Founders is much more elegant, balanced, and sophisticated. If you're a fan of imperial stouts, this is one not to miss.

12oz bottle poured into an oversized snifter at cellar temp. Pretty sure this is from 2011...hope I’m not drinking it too early.

A: Black as night and sludgy. A dusting of a head quickly disappeared leaving a thin ring around the glass. Not much lacing to speak of.

S: Strong coffee and chocolate. I can feel the alcohol tickle my nostrils. Yikes!

T: Not as hot as anticipated. Really nice actually. Lots of coffee and chocolate. A touch of floral hops leads you to a pleasant finish of balanced roasted dark malt. It's impressive how delicate this is while still delivering tons of full flavor.

M: Pretty full bodied and chewy, but not off the charts. A good amount of hop/alcohol tickle. Drinkability is on the low side...best to chill with this one for awhile.

O: I don’t know for a fact but, relying on my tastebuds, I’m going to assume that this is the base for two of my favorite beers...FBS and KBS. While I miss those additional dimensions, this is an top notch stout in its own right. Glad I have another bottle to rest.
