12 ounce bottle bottled on 7/20/13 poured into a tulip

A: deep red/purple, lots of bubbles

S: smells like a raspberry jam, lots of fruit and very sweet

T: It's like biting into a fresh raspberry.... A lot of the times fruit beers taste artificial, but Founders did well with this. Slight dry finish

M: This is sweet, but not over the top. There is some body to it to make it seem like a beer.

It appears that Founders made a raspberry jam and then put alcohol into it and made it a beer. This is unique and refreshing and Founders nailed what they were going for. This is a great beer on a hot summer day. Reminds me of the New Glarus beers...

12oz bottle poured into a globe.

A: Deep ruby red in color. Great clarity. Pinkish white head retains at a modest quarter inch. Lacing is small and spotty.

S: Raspberry juice with a light tartness. The malt base smells of pie crust with perhaps just a suggestion of cocoa.

T: Fresh and bold raspberry taste up front. A modest level of tartness and good attenuation do a nice job of making sure that this beer never feels too sweet. The malt base is more subdued than on the nose, but some crust and cocoa do come through. Semi-sweet finish of raspberry and hints of a tootsie roll-type chocolate flavor.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied. A slight suggestion of weight is whisked away by a fluffy texture and modest carbonation.

O: Is this a straightforward fruit beer? Yes and no. The raspberry is definitely the main attraction, but there’s enough contrast thrown in to add complexity and enhance drinkability. Fresh and authentic fruit flavor is the driving force, but a balancing tartness and supporting malt base make this one of the best fruit beers on the market. I don’t think I’ve ever been this pleased with a fruit-forward beer that wasn’t a lambic.

Thanks to krl2112 for sending this bottle! Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a TBBC pint glass.

A: Dark red - almost magenta - appears nearly opaque but is clear when held to light. Forms a thin light pink head with visible carbonation fairly low.

S: Sweet and fruity, with some grainy malt in the background (wheat and/or pilsner malt). Almost reminds me of a slightly tart fruit juice cocktail (raspberry cranberry juice?).

T: Sweet and mildly tart raspberries, again some wheat grainy and pilsner malt flavors, lightly tart with a moderately dry finish.

M: Medium body, a bit of a sticky mouthfeel, low alcohol presence and fairly low carbonation sensation.

O: Well, it's not going to be my favorite beer. But - it's really pretty good for a non-sour fruited beer, one of the better ones I've had. Recommended if you're in the mood for something a little different.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful ruby color with a medium head and good lacing

Smell: Raspberries and some malt. Sweet and tart, just like a raspberry. Not complex but enticing to someone who loves fresh raspberries (like, say, me)

Taste: Again, raspberries and malt. This tastes fresh. It's sweet and tart at that same time, and unlike most fruit beers, this doesn't go too far with the sweetness. The raspberry flavor is powerful, and they certainly didn't skimp on the fruit here. If you don't like raspberries, you won't like the beer. If you like raspberries a little, you'll like the beer a little. And if you love raspberries, you'll love this beer.

Mouthfeel: Just about perfect. It has just enough thickness while still going down so easy. With as much of the sweet fruit flavor that there is, it isn't sticky. And it's nice and crisp.

Overall: It's not cheap, and it's not kidding when it says it is a "pure raspberry ale". It's also not complex, and it's also not something that everyone will like. But I enjoyed it for what it is, and I'll drink it again. It's one of the best fruit beers I've had just because the mouthfeel is not too thin and the sweetness isn't overpowering.

A - Not a lot of carbonation when poured aggressively. Color is a rich reddish pink.

S - Smell is very sweet with lots of raspberry, strawberry, and cherry notes

T - Pleasantly complex. I expected liquid raspberry pie from the overly sweet smell, but taste is balanced with notes of fruit, sweet, tart and a malty finish.

M - Even though carbonation seemed lacking the texture matches up with the taste pretty well.

O - I'm always a little nervous about trying fruit beers. This might be the least favorite Founders beer I've had to date, but it's definitely an above average fruit beer still. Good beer for a warm summer day.

LOOK: Pours a light brick red color with a pink tinted head. A good amount of lacing is left behind as well. Definitely looks like a well crafted fruit beer.

SMELL: Raspberries and sweet doughy malts. This actually has the aroma of a raspberry muffin. A bit of tart smelling berry notes are coming through as well.

TASTE: Full on raspberry purée flavor that is quite nice. Small bitterness with a citrus hint that is quickly cast aside for more berry. Light berry tartness, pale and biscuity malt character, but mainly fresh raspberry jam here. Bright, fresh and utterly delicious.

FEEL: Medium bodied, well carbonated brew with a delicate tartness that lingers with that raspberry presence in the finish. There is a tapering rooty bitterness that adds a layer to the flavor profile and definitely sticks with you.

OVERALL: Rubaeus is a successful brew, that is for sure. With heaps of berry flavor from 5 different stages of berry additions, this is a straight forward, high quality fruit beer. I'd love to pair this with my grandmother's chocolate raspberry cake.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Chimay goblet.

A - Rosy pink with little to no head.

S - Jammy raspberry, small amount of yeasty funk.

T - Sweet but not cloying, slightly sour. Like a light lambic. Vague metallic aftertaste.

M - Very fine, effervescent carbonation. Light body, refreshing.

A beginner's lambic. Fresh, fruity taste with slight sour notes. A refreshing fruit beer that would work as a great introduction to lambic or other sour beer styles.

I typically do not like most fruit beers, but I thought I would like this one.

A: Deep reddish / raspberry color light pink foam, nice amount of head

S: Yep, that's raspberry

T: Overly sweet for my taste, but the wife likes this one. Not as sweet as some of the other fruit beers, I think founders did a nice job with this, just was hoping for a bit of tartness or acidity.

O: Not for me, but I can see how some would appreciate this beer.
