Pours a deep but vibrant crimson, head has a slightly pink tinge to it. Full on raspberry onslaught, nothing artificial about it, just pure raspberry like homemade raspberry jam. There's a definite sugar cookie malt sweetness going on underneath which further enhances the fruit, but other than that it's all raspberry. A slight natural tartness lingers on the finish. Just a step behind the New Glarus fruit beers in terms of fruit intensity. There aren't many "clean" fruit beers I enjoy but this is certainly one of them. That said, it's not a beer to drink in quantity but as a nice aperitif or as something fun to pair with sweets.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Founders snifter.

Appearance: Pours a deep, dark red with a one inch light pink head. Leaves a nice lacing down the glass.

Smell: Hello raspberry. Raspberry, raspberry, and more raspberry. It's pretty one-note, but luckily I happen to love raspberries. Still, it does come off just a touch artificial.

Taste: Aaaaand, surprise! It tastes like a boatload of raspberries. Unlike the smell, flavor-wise this is not artificial in the least. Very slight tartness. Similar raspberry intensity as New Glarus Raspberry Tart, but not as tart. This is definitely sweet, to the point where I don't think I could handle drinking more than 12 oz. in a night. However, in limited quantities, this is pretty damn delicious (assuming you like raspberries. If not, bail now).

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium-to-low carbonation. Very smooth.

Overall: If you love raspberries, this is the beer for you. It'sone-dimensional, but it nails that dimension very well.

Poured into a chalice. The color is deep mahogany. There are a few bubbles but not much of a head otherwise.

The aroma has sweet cherry and that's about it.

This tastes very sweet. There is rich cherry. This makes for a great dessert sipper. Hints of vanilla are noted after a few sips.

This is full bodied and slightly syrupy.

I would say this belongs on pancakes if I wasn't so loyal to maple syrup. This is very sweet so a little goes a long way. The flavor is good and the quality high; this might just not be for me.

Tasted 20 July 2013. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a nice deep pink with brownish shades behind it. Clear, with half-finger of pinkish-white head. Okay retention and lacing.

Smell is a balance of raspberry and malts.

Taste is similar, combining sweet caramel malts with raspberry. It's just sweet sweet sweet, with nothing to balance it. Also has a funny mouth-smacking buttery back-end.

Feel is light-bodied, kinda prickly.

A relatively weak raspberry beer, in my opinion. Not bad, but I just find it dull, and that buttery character doesn't blend well at all with the raspberry. Lastly, the raspberry is not as potent as it is in the best fruit beers. Comes nowhere close to the quality of New Glarus's Raspberry Tart, so I'll stick to that.

Served in a great lakes snifter

A very bright pink color. Minimal head which dissipates quickly. No lacing

S fresh raspberries! Fresh being the operative word. Like you just put your face in a bucket of freshly picked raspberries. Smells delicious!

T more raspberries! It's sweet, teetering between just right and cloying. Although as it warmed the sweetness resided which i found more enjoyable. The aftertaste is nice and lingers then finishes dry. I couldn't drink more than one of these.

M moderate carbonation with a mild oily finish that coats your tongue. I thought a bit more carbonation would have made this more drinkable and cut some of the lingering sweetness.

O a good beer that was a touch too sweet for me but a nice night cap

Pours a very deep red with a one finger head that dissipates quickly. Head seems more like the head on top of a fruit juice than the head of a typical ale.

Smell is mostly raspberry, unsurprisingly. There is something more there, perhaps a very subtle hop character underneath the fruit. Hard to determine it, at least for me.

Sort of a dry mouthfeel. The carbonation really hit me, peaking right as I swallowed. Sticky. Drinks like a soda.

Taste is not so strong as the beer first touches the tongue. The raspberry takes a moment or two to reveal itself as the dominant flavor, but when it does... wow, it really dominates!

All in all, I'm not the biggest fan of fruit beers, but here Founders does a good job of not overpowering the palate. There is a complexity here that reveals itself, before the raspberry hammer falls.
