12 oz bottle poured into a globe at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Deep raspberry red color with a 1-finger bubbly, pink head. Decent retention with some spots of lacing. Clear with lots of bubbles.

S – Raspberries and bready, grainy malt. It reminds me a lot of Cerise except with raspberries.

T – Sweet nearly all the way through with lots of raspberries and some bready, grainy malt. Toward the finish, the raspberry flavor shifts to an earthier, bitter flavor, much like what happens with actual raspberries.

F – Light-to-medium-bodied, good carbonation, a sticky but crisp mouthfeel, and a bittersweet and very dry finish. Dry, bittersweet raspberry flavors linger for a while.

O – This is a nice fruit beer. It reminds me a lot of Cerise, of course with raspberries instead of cherries. I think this is better-crafted than Cerise with a stronger base beer and noticeably fresh fruit being used (rather than extracts). I still prefer fruit beers that are mostly beer with a touch of fruit rather than the other way around, but this tasty and drinkable one will do. Nice job from Founders.

Founders Rubaeus

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a CBS snifter. Served chilled...

A) Raspberry red... Go figure... A nice finger of head with a pinkish hue. This settles to a wispy dusting. Not much lacing.

S) Pretty sweet aroma... Raspberry juice with a whiff of grass.

T) Delivers on the raspberry in a big way. If you're doing a fruit beer, you have to go all in on flavor, and Founders accomplishes that here. No weak sauce allowed. The finishing flavors are a leafy raspberry tea.

M) Lighter medium body, with moderate carbonation. Raspberry flavor coats the palate nicely.

O) This is a top-notch raspberry brew. Not as good as their Blushing Monk, but a solid option, and a must try if you love raspberry.

At the outset of this review, I feel a disclaimer to be somewhat necessary. That is, this is a fruit beer--a style that has become a bit of a laughing stock in the craft beer world. I have seen this occur close to home with Magic Hat's flagship #9 which is altogether disregarded by most of the beer snobs I know. That said, Founder's has yet to let me down and I love raspberries, so I figured I'd shell out the seemingly overpriced $4 for a single and give it a fair shot.

A: Beautiful ruby, as you would expect from, say, raspberry juice.

S: Raspberry again, with almost nothing else. Very pleasant, though.

T: As expected, the raspberry flavor is quite overwhelming and, although very pleasant, it is quite difficult to tell that you're not drinking a raspberry juice cocktail of some sort. No hints of alcohol or malt for me or those who tried my pour. Most doubted that I was in fact drinking alcohol.

M: Substantial and impressive.

Overall, especially due to the price of this offering, I would generally dissuade others from shelling out the $13 or $14 for a 4-pack considering the low alcohol content. However, I don't regret trying it at all and, if someone approached me asking for my recommendations for fruity beers, this would be chief among them. Very well done for the style, but not a beer I can see many flocking to considering the pricetag.

A-clear light ruby color with a light pinkntonwhitenhead and a little lacing

S-sweet, raspberry, slight tartness, little malt

T-raspberry, sweet, light malt, minimally tart

F-light to medium body with moderate carbonation, crisp and light

O-decent fruit beer, but too sweet for me, wish it had a lot more tartness
