look: 3 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Appearance: Opaque reddish hue. Not as clear as I thought it would be.

Smell: I can really smell the raspberries. Smells like alcohol and raspberry juice.

Taste: Little bit tart right away, from the raspberries, but not as sweet as a lambic.Very refreshing without feeling light.

Mouthfeel: Tingly from the carbonation but not sour.

Overall: This is very different from a lambic or a sour beer! It's heavy for something so fruity, in a good way. (449 characters)

The beer pours with no head whatsoever. Carbonation is minimal. The beer itself is a very deep red bordering on a light murky brown.

The nose is also a bit disappointing, it is very subdued. I get a minimal hint of raspberry and that is it, it is very subtle.

The taste is easily the best part of this beer. It is fuity sweet up front with a fair dosage of wet-raspberry, this transitions to a much more muted berry flavor towards the middle and then finishes pretty wet with no hint of bitterness.

This is a pretty good beer, one or two once in awhile would be pretty good. I would buy this again to have around for a nice changeup. (636 characters)

A: Dark red with sapphire highlights. Looks tasty!

S: Not much of a nose here. I'm not big into the aroma of beers though so it's not really a big deal. I get some vinegar and cherries.

T: Big raspberries upfront. Some cherries and other fruits, and some raisins too. It's nice. It's got kind of a kick to it, and I can't tell if it's the alcohol (which is very minimal) or just the flavor. I'm getting some cherry soda pop, vinegar, licorice, green apple, citrus, kind of an oaky taste. It's got a slight soapy bitterness to it on the back end.

M: A tad heavier than expected. Not bad though. It has a velvety feel to it, almost kind of a heavy mouth. It's very smooth though.

O: Didn't know what to expect as I've never had a fruit beer other than Shiner's prickly pear. This was overall a good one. I like the taste and the mouth although they aren't necessarily fantastic. Founders never disappoints me. (914 characters)

[Suggested Glassware: Shaker Glass or Flute]

The pour was a murky almost dark cranberry red with a small light pink fizzy head that was fully diminishing and produced no lacing to speak of.

The aroma was all about raspberries, with a light grain malt and a sweet yeast along with notes of candi sugar, a light vinous odor and a moderate tartness.

The taste was boldly sweet with a nice malt undertone and a huge raspberry presence from the start and was present throughout, progressing slightly with a wheaty sour taste latching on towards the end. The flavor lasted an average time after the swallow with a fruity tart taste left behind on the taste buds to linger for a short while longer.

Mouthfeel was light in body and somewhat syrupy in texture with a strong ticklish carbonation.

Overall this was a very refreshingly tasty Fruit Beer, it possesses a bold fruit taste along with a mild hint of wheat only to be topped with a decent tartness making it very enjoyable and refreshingly easy to drink...

A beautiful dark ruby pour with little head or lacing. The nose is of raspberry overlaying a sweet backbone. Almost medium bodied with a carbonation level set to provide crispness and a flavor explosion. The smooth mouthfeel translates to an expertly well balanced raspberry, tart and sweet flavor profile. Raspberry predominates, then the tartness hits the palate and ends on a sweet note. The finish is crisp with a lingering tartness after the raspberry and sweetness fades. Another masterpiece from Founders. (512 characters)

Bottle opened on 10.25.13
06/19/13? Partially rubbed off

A - Pours a cloudy ruby red with a fizzy pink head that fades fast.

S - Sweet raspberry and malty.

T - Super sweet raspberry, hard to get much else.

D - Good carbonation with a light body.

O - Very sweet and fruity. A bit syrupy. ok. (295 characters)

Poured into a mini snifter. Bottleneck says Bottled On 04/23/14.

A- Pours a crab apple red color with a 1/4 inch white head that doesn't retain long before dissipating to a thin ring around the edge of the glass and minimal surface foam. Non-resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind

S- Aroma is of raspberry soda, similar to the Lindeman's Raspberry. The fruit follows through all the way with not much trace of an actual beer smell.

T- Big rush of raspberry that transitions into the base beer flavor I was looking for in the nose. There's a cough syrup quality in the aftertaste that doesn't agree with me.

M- Syrupy which doesn't help the bit of cough syrup I found in the flavor. Medium carbonation with a lightish body.

O- Nice to take a couple sips of but I probably couldn't finish an entire glass of this. (822 characters)

Being a big raspberry fan I bought a four pack of these and already tried it and not liked it but thought I'd review it anyway and not suprisingly it's a raspberry hue with a one finger head and some nice lacing, the smell is raspberry lollies that's it,the mouthfeel is medium bodied and well carbonated and on taste I have to make sure I'm not drinking cool drink its basically a big sweet mess of raspberries everything else has no chance of getting through the only taste I get is raspberry jam and raspberry lollies and overall if you like lollies and sweet stuff then sure try it but ill never drink this one again cheers. (627 characters)

Pours dark garnet with a large pink head.
Aroma of raspberry confectionery and little else.
Simlar flavours, very sweet. Raspberry lollies again sums it up perfectly. Very little to it really.
Could use more carbonation.
Much too sweet. Nothing apparent behind the raspberry. (275 characters)

Serving: Bottle into tulip
Enjoyed: 21 November 2013

Appearance: A deep burgundy red with an ever so slightly pink head that builds quickly and fades just as fast, leaving a small ring of bubbles on the edges of the glass.

Smell: A sweet bouquet of raspberries and not much else. This doesn't smell as strong as Lindemann's Framboise.

Taste: This is a sweet fruit beer. The raspberry flavor is especially pronounced, but lacking any sourness whatsoever. Almost tastes like raspberry juice, but there is certainly an amount of beer-like bitterness on the very back of the palate.

Mouthfeel: Not especially effervescent, and quickly looses carbonation.

Overall: A decent brew, but not one I would search out again. I prefer sour fruit beers over this, and if I want to drink a raspberry beer, I'll go for a raspberry lambic. (827 characters)

This beer pours to a rich ruby red. A pinkish foam does not last and there is virtually no lacing. It is a deep red with plenty of carbonation.

The aroma of this one is all raspberry from start to finish.

It starts with a blast of sweet raspberry, but quickly turns to a more sour taste. While not unpleasant, the taste was disjointed rather than complex.

There was plenty of carbonation and there was a refreshing feel.

This was not my favorite Founders brew, but it was not a bad offering. I didn't think that it separated itself from the pack and would have preferred it stayed sweeter throughout because the back end of the flavor didn't quite meld with the initial fruity sweetness. (691 characters)

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 3.75

Pours a lovely deep, clear, ruby color with a faint pink, soapy head that remains modest despite a vigorous pour. Relatively mild aroma smells of raspberries and beer--not nearly as tart and luxurious as a raspberry lambic. The flavor tastes of raspberry juice blended with a wheat beer. The raspberry comes up front and is superseded by a fog of grain husk. This transition is less than elegant, feeling like the beer is morphing from one thing to another on your tongue. The finish is almost vegetal, akin to trace amounts of dilute herbal hops. Alcohol is also more noticeable than it ought to be considering the entirely pedestrian ABV. The mouthfeel is smooth and crisp though, and excellently suited to the style--probably the best thing this beer has going for it.

As an admitted Founders fan-boy, I must confess this brew is something of a disappointment considering their track record. It's not bad, but it feels like a novelty compared to Founders' usual standard of quality. If you're looking for a class fruit-infused beer, you're better off sticking to Lindemans. (1,077 characters)

Appearance is a cranberry red with a thin layer of head. The nose is tart and the flavor is light and fruity. The raspberry flavor really shines through in this offering.

I enjoyed my small sample and certainly can appreciate the craft that went into making this offering, but it tasted more like a mixed drink to me than a beer. As I was drinking this, I actually thought that I finally found a beer that my wife (who hates beer) would enjoy. (444 characters)

12 oz. bottle purchased at Connecticut Ave. Wine and Liquors in DuPont Circle, NW D.C., poured into my The Bruery tulip glass, drank 11/6/13 over a half-hour.

A: 2/3 - deep ruby red coloration, minimal clarity (cannot see or read through), initial whitish one finger carbonation resolved into a subtle glass lacing throughout the drinking; moderate-to-high carbonation, little alcohol legs

S: 8/12 - lots of raspberries and vinous qualities; no off aromas detected

T: 15/20 - on the anterior tongue, there a lambic-like fruity-estery slap - raspberries through and through, and, in the middle profile featured, some sweetness continues with a slight sourness; finished dry; little-to-no alcohol flavors, which was appropriate at 6.0%

M: 3/5 - light-bodied and high carbonation makes it tart and refreshing but, even so, it's still too thin for me

O: 6/10 - as much as I love Founders, this, for me, is one of the worst beers in their portfolio; it tastes like a poor man's version of Lindeman's Framboise, which is a decent enough lambic; I was definitely expecting more complexity and not just getting slapped back-and-forth by raspberries; I think that lots of wine and uninitiated beer drinkers could enjoy this beer in moderation but it's just not for me and won't be buying it again if it comes out for 2014

12oz bottle

A- Pours a dark reddish color with an off-white head that turns into a ring of lacing.

S- There is no mistaking the aroma. It is fresh raspberries all the way. What is great about the aroma is it smells like you have your nose to a bowl of fresh raspberries and not an artificial fruit-like aroma.

T- The taste is nothing short of amazing. Tart raspberries up front with a lingering sweetness coming in. At first, I think the sweetness will overpower but the tartness comes back in the finish to balance things out. Even though the taste is 100% raspberry, it does not taste one dimensional because there is so many waves of flavors in the taste.

M- One of the first things I noticed in the taste was the thickness of the mouthfeel. I was expecting a very light body and a high amount of carbonation but this beer is medium bodied with a moderate-average amount of carbonation.

O- Overall, I am extremely impressed with this beer. It is a must try for anyone who loves raspberries. If you love raspberries, you will love this beer. If you dislike raspberries, you will dislike this beer. Highly recommended! (1,124 characters)

A - Very deep ruby red color with small pinkish hue head. No head retention and weak lacing.
S - Smells like raspberry as expected. Smells very good.
T - Taste is off. First you get a hit of just "beer" taste. Then as that fades you get super sweet raspberry juice. The flavors just do not meld together until you drink enough of it but by then it is too late.
M - Light and fizzy not really in a good way. Almost like a sparkling fruit juice.
O - I say it is poor overall. If I am looking for a raspberry flavor like this I will go for a Lambic over this any day. This is similar to the Wild Red beer from AB. (610 characters)

As you'd expect pours a deep red colour with a white foamy head.

The smell is raspberries and a little smokey malt.

The taste is raspberry, a little sour, tart and just little bit of malt.

The mouthfeel is quite light with medium carbonation.

This would be a good summer beer, I'd defiantly recommend if you're a fan of fruit beers. (335 characters)

This pours a tan rose, an obvious blending of the tan of beer with the red of the raspberry. The head is a nice rose color as well and more resembling of a lambic.

The nose is sweet and definitely dominating in the nose. The malt is subtle and the hops are overwhelmed.

The taste is rather nice and tart with the raspberry being in balance with the hoping. There is a definite sweetness that is nicely balanced with dry overtones. I really like the flavors in this. Unique and refreshing is what comes to mind.

The moutfeel is decent and not watery, somewhat effervescent, but not quite enough for my taste.

Overall I really like this and could easily drink a dangerous amount of it on a hot summer day. Add this to my list of summer beers. (744 characters)

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a dark reddish pink, with a half of a finger of pink head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that covered the entire top of the beer in wispy clouds.

Aroma: Very fruity, like a bowl of fresh raspberries and honey. There are also some slight ester aromas too.

Taste: Like the aroma, the beer is very fruity, like…a bowl of fresh raspberries. It’s sweet, without being cloying, and finished with some good tartness without being puckering. Unfortunately, there’s not much actual beer flavor here, just the fruit.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin, but with some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 5.7%, there’s no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a very tasty beverage. Good raspberry flavor with a great balance between the sweet and the tart, but unfortunately not too much beer flavor. It’s more like a low-alcohol punch. That being said, it’d be a great brunch drink!! (991 characters)

I was able to try Founders Rubaeus at Pranca in Minneapolis. I was pleasantly surprised that they had four tap offerings from Founders. Served in a snifter, the - beer is ruby red with a skim of white head.

It has a big nose of raspberries and grains in the background.

Taste is berries, berries and berries. Not artificial and not overpowering but they rule the roost. Some malts in the background add a touch of balance.

Once in a while beer for me, but it is well executed and pretty darn tasty. (502 characters)

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Clear ruby red color with a half a fingers worth of pinkish head. Almost no head retention with a light amount of lacing.

Smell- Raspberries and nothing else.

Taste- Both sweet and tart raspberry with just a hint of bread and grain flavors.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with slightly below average amount of fizzy carbonation. Sticky aftertaste.

Overall- If you like raspberries, then you'll like this. Good beer, it just needs a little more carbonation. (504 characters)

Review #100.

12 oz bottle poured into my snifter. The bottling date has been rubbed off, but it must be at least four months old. I got this in a hop-box from vande for winning his recent "Help a School out LIF..What can I say - vote, and get a chance at free beer?" Thanks again!

A - nice looking beer, at least color-wise. Held up to the light, I get nice reds and browns. Points off for the lack of head though. I like to see a big foam from beers like this, but alas. Some carbonation bubbles present.

S - eh. There's a nice sweetness here, but also an empty bitterness. I don't like the malt that Founders uses for some of their beers, because it lacks in substance. Of course, I don't know the specific recipe for Rubaeus, but I know that the base here is rather empty.

T - dear god, a raspberry explosion. This beer is all flavor and no spine, but what a sweet, wonderful flavor it is. Objectively, I know that this brew doesn't have a ton going on besides its fruit flavor, but subjectively, I love sweet brews.

M - bitter and empty, suggested in the smell, but still pretty yummy. This is a very sessionable beer. No alcohol present, beautiful.

O - Rubaeus is a decent beer, very sessionable, and a nice substitute for more expensive sours. (1,259 characters)

Appearance: It has a nice clear ruby red color to it. It has a nice light pink head that dies down moderately and leaves really nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of raspberries, slight bready malts and some tartness.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some sweet raspberries upfront, a slight tartness, some breadiness and wheat malts.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel. Simple and delicious.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas. Probably the best Raspberry Ale I've ever had the opportunity to try. Definitely worth a try. (648 characters)

A: This poured a translucent cherry red with almost no head.
S: It smelled like sweet raspberry jam, with a slight bit of bready malt.
T: It tasted like sweet raspberry jam. It had a clean and sweet aftertaste.
M: It was slightly thick with a little carbonation. Light body.
D: This was a fantastic raspberry ale. The scent and taste were delicious. The body was ok, but the finish was really smooth, so it was really easy to drink. Better than Raspberry Tart. Impressive dessert beer. (485 characters)

I don't care much for the looks, but for what it is, I'm not sure how you get around it. The pour is a deep burgundy, looks like wine, and fortunately, it's not clear like other fruity beers, but rather has a slight haze to it. The head isn't much, a finger thick at best, and it's pink. Little retention so you don't have to look at it long.

The nose is overwhelmingly raspberry. No malt or hop presense whatsoever, just garden picked, fresh raspberries.

It's ok. The first few sips almost resemble beer, but after that, it's more or less and Bartles and James wine cooler...raspberry flavored.

Not awful, just not very beer like. Sweet up front, slight resemblance to an ale midsip, then very tart. The tart is extremely sharp, but never crosses the line to being kriek-like. Carbonation starts to work near the finish with a strong bite to completely scrape the palate clean so you can tolerate the next swallow.

A fruit beer is what a fruit beer is--barely beer like, some not even drinkable. This is drinkable, but only slightly beer like. It's well above average for a fruit beer. (1,090 characters)
