A-pours a reddish amber with a fizzy white head that fades rather quickly.
S-tons of raspberries with some maltiness in the background
T-raspberries up front followed by some caramel and more raspberries in the finish. Hops providing balance but does not lend any flavor
M-medium bodied, a bit smooth and slightly above average carbonation
O-a nice flavorful fruit beer that isn't sickly sweet. Wouldn't drink it all the time but definitely worth trying

No bottle information. Founders' Rübæus is brewed in the style of a Fruit ale with a focus on Raspberries. Available as a limited summer seasonal release in 12 oz. 4 packs and on draft. I am comparing a fresh release alongside a bottle of the previous year's vintage to see how the raspberry character evolves.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above 57º Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a rosy ecru white head of a fizzy, crisp consistency over a burgundy amber body. Retention is average, lacing is light and spotty. 3.25
(Smell) Sweet raspberries in a berry syrup amidst a very pale malt background, virtually transparent from the raspberry character. Clean but perceivably sweet and incredibly fruity. 3.5
(Taste) The flavor generates more diversity from the raspberry, notably a pleasing tartness up front which gives the raspberry angle a slightly more natural flavor. Regardless, there's not enough action coming from the malt and hop profiles to comment on how it all falls together in a beer sense. The raspberry comes through just about as much as it possibly could in a beer generating a thorough bodied, acidic and juicy raspberry flavor. Finishes on an everlasting raspberry sweetness dragging through fruit sugar. 3.75
(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, sticky, modestly syrupy and slightly dry. Carbonation generates a soft frothiness for a mildly crisp mouthfeel. Body is medium/high for the style, medium/high overall. Balance is fruity and sweet over tartness. Alcohol presence is very low, drinkability high particularly if you like sweet fruity beers. 4
(Overall) It's an experience to behold, as raspberry flavor transfers to beer to a degree unlike any other fruit. Thus, expect Rübæus to be one menacing fruity bomb of a beer. A touch sweet but shy of cloyingly so, tread lightly especially if you are expecting a fruit accented beer, because the fruit is the core of this beer. I consider this a very tasty beer but it's obviously not for everyone, especially the faint of heart. I could see fans of Leinenkugel's fruit-laden beers or wild blue find crossover enjoyment in Rübæus. 3.75
Rübæus Pure Raspberry Ale
1 year aged: Head is slightly less rosy, more gray. Body is noticeably smoggier, otherwise very similar in appearance to fresh. Nose is similar with a creeping sourness and peppery grain character sneaking in to compete with the raspberry. Flavor is much the same, the tartness really not any bolder than the fresh vintage but the spicy, peppery yeast character generates a welcome kick to counteract all that raspberry flavor. The texture is a bit spritely compared to fresh possibly due to excessive carbonation and a slightly lighter body accentuated by a perkier spice character from the yeast. This was a fun experiment although I didn't find the aging to make much of a significant impact on this beer. The raspberry is still front and center in this beer regardless of how old or new it is. You shouldn't be too upset if you forget to drink one of these or decide to stash one in the cellar through the winter.
Recommended vintage: Try one aged, drink three fresh.

Love me some Founders. Took awhile, however, to give this a whirl. Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into my snifter. Next to zero head, though a unique deep ruby hue that demanded a longer look than I give most brews. Aroma of clear raspberry (I hope, right?), light citrus, and a hint of malty goodness. Not as much actual raspberry to the taste... quite subtle really. A nice refreshing tart aftertaste. Light carbonation and slightly dry in the mouth (was thinking that it might be too syrupy sweet) and pleased overall. I would not buy this again (even though it was good, not really my thing)... but was happy for the experience. Delicate touch to a beer that could have been a raspberry nightmare.
