12 oz. bottle dated 02/24/2009 (twist off cap!?) poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass. Liquid is a hazy, cloudy amber to brown in color. Slightest of slight off white colored heady, no lacing. Not much too look at for the style, not bad, but not great.
Smell is pretty good. Nice malt bomb here. Tons of caramel and toffee here, and I mean tons. Sweetness is continued. Nice sweet bread doe or maybe even a cake or waffle batter. Slight aromas of dark and dehydrated fruits. Candied plums, cherries and raisins. Nothing not to like.
Taste is really good too. Again a nice big malt bomb, and Founders did a really good job, as usual. Nice sweetness that parallels the smell. In addition to all the dehydrated fruits toffee, caramel and candied fruit, there is a nice flavor of butterscotch. Slight aftertastes of vanilla and oak. Bottle says 50 IBU's but it doesn't feel that way to me. Really nice flavors blended together.
Mouthfeel is pretty good, full bodied and full flavor. Silky, smooth, and a good balance of flavors. No hop presence in the flavor but a slight bitter feel in the finish. Might be slightly under carbonated due to the age, but this guy is 3 years old, so I'd say it's held up quite nice for the age. Drinks well, a nice sipper. Alcohol doesn't doesn't burn or anything either, well hidden for a brew that's almost 10%. Overall another great beer from Founders.
