A: Maple syrup color with some floatys that don't seem to settle to the bottom. The head forms up golden and big.
S: Great smell, I could get a good wiff before I was finished pouring the beer. Smells sweet and oaky. No bad odors and very complex.
T: Sweet maple with a good amount of oak flavor. The alcohol comes through a lot at the end but it isn't off-putting. Tastes good but the flavors seem to come together dare I say a little too well. I'm having trouble identifying one individually.
M: Sits perfect. Carbonation is perfect and some flavors really start to develop.

Overall another really great showing from Founders. I was a little disappointed by the taste which didn't really bring any identifiable flavors. The alcohol really plays a good role in this beer and the mouthfeel and smell are really spectacular. Definitely a beer to drink slowly.

12oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a clear medium to dark amber color with a half finger of white head. Head recedes fairly quickly to just a ring around the beer.

S: Citrus and caramel are most evident, lemon and orange zest oddly showing above all else. I get some bready malts as I keep smelling. Spicy oak and booze are also evident.

T: Lots of spices, I still get quite a bit of lemon and orange zest with nutmeg and spicy oak. Some caramel sweetness, but well balanced.

M: Thick bodied with light but smooth and adequate carbonation.

O: Not what I normally expect from an Old Ale, quite spicy and fairly dry. I'm really not sure what to make of this beer.

Appearance: Lighter brown and amber. Very thin head.

Smell: Sweet. Brown Sugar. Has some interesting plums and dark sweetness to it. Certainly some alcohol present. Kind of funky. Interesting, but I dig it

Taste: Sweet alcohol comes right up front. Some funky brown sugar and molasses comes up front. The alcohol is there. I'm grabbing some caramel. Almost kind of tart. Again, interesting with a bit of a weird aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Thin with a mild lack of carbonation.

Overall: I'm going with the word funky on this. It's got a interesting sweetness to it with a very present alcohol to it. Lots of brown sugars and molasses to it. Not my favorite beer in the world but it's an interesting take on the style.

Pours a red and brown hue with a buttery fluffy head that stays sticky throughout the drink.

Hints of oak, caramel, syrup, wood, sweet malt, dried dark fruits, bourbon-esque hints.

I get a nice medium mouthfeel with a ton of wonderfully blended flavors intertwined perfectly. I get that distinctive founders water taste, fresh oak, sweet deep malts, a wonderful molasses, dark plum, some slight bitterness from a low alpha hop, caramel, nice old aged taste, some biscuit, marshmallow and cotton candy, superb sweetness blended with the alcohol.

Overall, a great balanced beer, nothing short of what I've come to expect from my favorite brewer.

Cheers!!

Bottle dated 4/16/2012 from 4-pack purchased at local grocery chain.

Opaque, red-orange elixir poured into Bruery snifter. White head quickly disappears. Minimal lacing.

Very nice aroma of cinnamon, caramel, molasses, plum, apricot. Subtle oak. More pronounced as the brew warms.

This is a very complex brew with the components mixing well providing a nice contrast. Initial burnt caramel, hops and alcohol, then the dark fruits, oak and cinnamon.

Solid brew. Complex, alcohol well hidden. I will age a few and see how it changes.
