Phew. Two-finger, tan, foamy rippled head rises from the depth of a burnt red brew; lots of brown and yellows. Clarity is very weak and lots of sediment is present, even with a conservative pour.

No sure what to think of the nose. It's pungent. It's fierce. It's awe-taking-ly malty and kicked with hops. Sugary, tangerine, and biting.

Tons of roasty (near burnt) sugary (not suager bomb) flavors... A bit like a B-wine.. Light carbonation, wet, refreshing, and no heat.

I'm not sure this brew is a proper representation of an Old Ale, but it's still quite good. Thank you Matt for the wonderful extras!

Poured into a snifter.

A: Slightly hazy red-brown with a one-finger, off-white, creamy and foamy head that lasted several minutes. Nice lacing.

S: Dark fruit, alcohol, and oak.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Oak and vanilla, then alcohol.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Smooth, warm, and alcoholic.

O: This beer looks really nice in my snifter. And the oak and vanilla taste is interesting. I don't have much experience with old ales, but I like this one.

Bottled on 04/19/2012. 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Dark red body. Slightly hazy with some sediment and slime rolling into the glass in the last ounce. One finger off white head settles into a thin cap. Great lacing and retention with alcoholic legs.

S - Molasses, toffee, oak, brown sugar, plums, and a touch of vanilla. A bit harsh with some alcohol notes but incredibly sweet and inviting.

T - Strong toffee notes with some molasses, brown sugar, and caramelized dark fruit sweetness. Smooth with some oak and vanilla on the end. Boozy warmth with a lasting malt bitterness.

M - Low carbonation. Body is lightly syrupy and big on the booze.

O - Excellent aroma and a great taste, but the booze creeps up fast and becomes a bit too much. Some aging would do wonders on this beer, but at a few months old its not terribly impressive. I do prefer Old Stock to this.

I was anxious to try this ale not only being a newly discovered Founders fan, but also because I have never had an old ale.

A - Murky copper color with huge head (I may have over poured) that dissipated slowly. Good lacing.

S - Light aroma but definite touches of alcohol, malt, molasses and even some citrus sub tones (orange?)

T - Sweet start with definite maltiness. Almost too much, but I didn't mind it. Alcohol comes through noticeably as well, but similarly not overpowering. Molasses, caramel and hint of citrus again. Moderate bitter finish.

M - Medium carbonation with oily mouthfeel. Not bad but would have liked a little more body to compliment the sweet maltiness.

Overall a very, very nice ale. Very drinkable. I want to try this again.

Bottled April 2012

A - Hazy amber with little head.

S - Boozy with wet oak and a hint of molasses.

T - Sweet malt with wet oak and alcohol.

M - Light carbonation, thick and almost syrupy.

D - This one needs some time. The wet oak is currently a little overpowering.

Pours a deep amber color, almost ruby. Short khaki colored head falls to a ring that leaves quite a bit of lacing.

I smell caramel, burnt brown sugar, pecan, some allspice, syrup, and flap jacks. Its aroma is strong, yet balanced; it tickles my nose with each whiff.

Burnt brown sugar, raisins, toffee, caramel, tea, with a bitter nut flavor. Well done!

Sticky, but nut too much! Pretty heavy, quite astringent, its like a nuclear assault on my tongue.

Another great beer from Founders! Perfect beer on this cold, rainy evening.

Bottled on 4/12/12

Hazy murky brown with lots of sediment in there Big bubbles around the edge of the glass. Very still beer.

Smell is sweet, molasses, woody, honey covered biscuits.

Taste is pretty well...tasty. More sweetness and oak then light bitterness, sweet black tea, hints of vanilla bean, slight warming booze.

Light carbonation, thick, delicious.

Good old Old Ale.
