A: Amber with 2 finger head, lots of lacing

S: I can't really smell much. Some malt...

T: Dark fruits, malt, bitterness from the hops... perfect sweetness, imo (although pretty sweet).

M: Smooth, lightly carbonated. Good thickness. Not much alcohol burn for 9.8% abv!

O: Another solid brew from Founders. They don't brew bad beers (based on all the ones I have tried so far anyway).

A- Amber body with some ruby highlights. Beige head does not last long, but leaves some bubbles around the glass. There is some sediment towards the bottom of the glass.

S- Malt, brown sugar, caramel, some hint of spices as well.

T- Starts as an malty beer with a hint of oak, but finishes with a huge sweet note that includes brown sugar and a hint of dried fruit.

M- Incredible smoothness with very low carbonation.

O- Very good brew that sneaks some interesting favors into the beginning and the end.

12 oz bottle dated April 6, 2012, poured into tulip pint.

A: Pours a clear, reddish amber color, with a paper-thin coating of off-white head.

S: Very sweet and sticky smelling, with strong molasses and ethanol smells. Brown sugar, caramel, oak, and raisin flavors add depth.

T: Spicy alcohol is the strongest flavor here, among all of the same malt and fruit flavors from the nose. A bit more honey enters into the taste, and there's a light bitterness on the finish.

M: Thick and sticky, with light carbonation. Leaves a bit of dryness on the finish.

O: Decent offering from Founders; I look forward to trying it with some age on it in the future, in hopes that the aging will bring out more flavors and limit the beer's heat a bit. In its young state, it does seem that this beer is more balanced than a number of other old ales, which become cloying quickly.

I get a light toasted, slightly burnt aroma coming off of this one. Not much else going on in the nose.

Pours a beautiful hazy amber with highlights of orange and yellow. Head is off-white, thin, and leaves little to no lacing.

A very nutty-like flavor is coming off of this one, like roasted almonds. It has a nice lingering sweetness on the finish that is somewhat mouthwatering. Slightly boozy, but the alcohol is hidden fairly well. Quite good!

Full body and light carbonation, this beer feels sticky when drinking it, syrupy almost. Overall it has it's shortcomings mostly in the aroma, but the taste well makes up for it.

12oz bottle into snifter.

A - Dark copper brown with some ruby highlights. Small off-white head.

S - Wood, roasted malts, vanilla bean, slight bourbon notes.

T - Dark fruit, vanilla, molasses, oak, and caramel. Nice balance and complexity. Sweet up front followed by a slightly bitter finish. Some alcohol evident.

M - Medium-full body. Smooth and silky. Low carbonation.

O - An enjoyable complex brew from Founders. Lots of flavors here, and they all work together well. This is a beer to sip and relax with.

Poured into Hunahpu snifter. Bottled 4/26/12 (2 months)

A- Pours a fairly dark but translucent brown. Pretty much no head to speak of, just leaves a white bubbly ring around the top. Fairly low carbonation, definitely some sedimentation (very small white specks) floating around.

S- Maple syrup, sweet malts, a tiny bit of brown sugar. About average aroma strength.

T- Maple syrup, malts, caramel, lightly sweet, finishes with a very lightly sweet dry maple aftertaste.

M- Medium bodied, low carbonation, very smooth, alcohol very well hidden.

O- This is a nice old ale. Definitely not as good or flavorful as the Better Half, but good for much more attainable brew. This beer is very easy to drink however I definitely think it could use more flavor like the Better Half. Definitely a good Founders offering, but not their best. At $16 for a 4-pack I don't see myself buying much more of this due to the expense, but I recommend at least trying it.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass at cellar temperature.

L - Medium amber color with a 2-finger bubbly cream-colored head. Really good retention and excellent lacing. Clear with lots of bubbles - more carbonation than I was expecting.

S - Lots going on here. Toasted and caramel malts, molasses, dark fruits like cherries and plums, raisins, and some chocolate, vanilla, and woody aromas. Maybe a touch of alcohol noticeable.

T - Sweet with flavors of caramel malts, dark fruits, molasses and vanilla. Finishes with a woody and alcoholic dryness.

F - Medium-bodied with good carbonation, a creamy and mouth-coating feel, and a very dry, almost astringent finish. Woody dryness lingers and complements the drying and throat-warming sensation brought on by the alcohol.

O - This beer was delicious and an awesome example of an old ale. It tastes and smells great with a variety of malt and dark fruity ester aromas and flavors. The molasses and oak-aging really add a lot of flavors, aromas, and character to this beer in my opinion. Another great offering from Founders.

Bottled 4/4/11
Deep amber colored, clear but with some suspended particles. There was a very attractive, one finger creamy white head that dissipated way to quickly. There was little carbonation.
A very sweet malty beer that tasted like honey, caramel, and I could also taste the alcohol.
It smelled like it tasted, sweet, notes of honey and alcohol.
This beer was silky smooth, mouth coating and added some alcohol heat on the finish. A very nice combination that added to the overall complexity.
I enjoyed this beer. I'm not as familiar with the style but enjoyed Curmudgeon enough to explore the style more thoroughly. I have one more 2011 left that I'll be holding on to till next year.
