Poured in to a pint glass.

A scant off-brown/tan head developed and dissipated quickly. The beer is a dramatic reddish gold with hints of ruby.

The aroma is not particularly strong -- malty sweet and no hops presence.

The main flavor component is malty, roasty sweetness. It has the characteristic oak-aged flavor: vanilla and bourbon -- but not too strong in either -- plus some tobacco. It's a high ABV beer, but the alcohol is well integrated with the other components. The hops take a back seat to the sweetness at first but then linger for a while at the end.

The body is full, bordering on being thick, and the carbonation is medium-light.

Overall, this is a very nice beer -- fun to drink as there's a lot going on in it (it's oak aged and contains molasses). It has a good balance between the sweetness and the hops. It's a good dessert beer, but would probably pair well with the right foods.

This beer is best served at 50F. As it warms up there is more complexity. The best taste/aroma is about 57F.

Poured a light tea color with about a 1F head in a Pretty Things balloon glass.
I like this glass for the style. It's similar to an over sized wine glass.

The aroma wasn't strong at first: light fruit. With warming, there is a pronounced oak aroma with fruit.

The mouth feel is especially good- not too carbonated transitioning well into the taste.

The taste: fruit and light coconut. The finish is lightly alcoholic, but it is rounded out and not overdone.

Overall, an excellent Old Ale. The mouth feel transitions well to the taste, which is nicely rounded out by the finish. I would have preferred a stronger aroma. However, with warming, the aroma has a pronounced oak.

Poured a ruby brown with a slight creamy white head. No retention, almost not lacing. The aroma has a nice oak pungency with hints of molasses. The taste is awesome, with the ale flavors (caramel, dark fruit) in the forefront with just a hint of the oak providing a nice counter. There is a nice weight to the beer (my preference would have been a little thicker) and a pleasant silky feel to it. A great barrel-aged ale.

Founders Brewing Company - Founders Curmudgeon (Old Ale), poured into a Craftgeer snifter.

Look - Pours a dark copper amber and ruby. Slightly hazy, no bubbles. Very minimal foamy head that dissipates almost instantly with little to no retention. Very little lacing.

Smell - Aroma is molasses and woody oak. Sweet malt.

Taste - Rich malt and molasses with a woody and sweet cherry finish. Sweet but the wood balances it out quite nicely.

Mouthfeel - Heavy-bodied with low almost cask-style carbonation. Only a touch of booziness for almost 10% is quite impressive. Sticky mouth coating.

Overall - This is a terrific homage to this style, a sweet molasses/cream/caramel/candy/cherry delight.
