Appearance - Pours 2 fingers of a rich golden lightl orange mocha foam, body is a very opaque burnt orange amber with suspended sediments and lite carb, head dwindles to a solid cap and leaves a nice foam ring after each quaff.

Smell - Dark fruits, dark brown sugar, rich dark toffee, rich vanilla carmels, light oak, warm freshly baked fruit cake.

Taste - sweet over-ripe dark fruits, a slight sour plum cherry amaretto, dark carmels and toffee, some brown sugar and molasses, alcohol soaked vanilla bean and oak, finishes with light sour plumskins, complimentary alcohol and a touch of dry oak.

Mouthfeel - Nearly full and mouthcoating, carb is on the lighter side and silky smooth and soft across the tongue, leaves some very late edges at the very back of the tongue. Latent heat after each sip.

Overall - An excellent old ale, great balance and complexity, flavors are bold and distinct and all complimentary, nearly a perfect symphony, a pleasant warming alcohol heat after each sip. I've aged this one for 2 years before opening and it is silky smooth - fantastic!

Pours with a huge light tan head that settles into a very high density, the beer is very clear and a nice bare color, nice head retention. Amber malt, nuttiness, pretty faint under that head Light malt sweetness, has an alcohol warmth to it, bread, some spice, caramel, hints of grain Palate: soft carbonation, very heavy and thick mouthfeel, alcohol on the aftertaste. The taste hides the ABV very well and you can tell it is well made when you drink it due to the seriousness of the beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a nice burnt orange / golden brown with about a finger of head. This recedes into a nice ring of foam around the edges with some lingering toward the center of the glass.

S: I get a dark fruits up front. Similar to the way a quad would smell. Also, some oak, and vanilla.

T: Tastes good. I get a slight oaky/vanilla. Again, some dark fruits with a malty / bread backbone. I also get some slight chocolate notes which become more apparent as the beer warms. Did not initially taste any alcohol, but again, as the beer warms, I very slightly feel the burn. A bit of dryness in the finish from the oak and the chocolate lingers. Raisins are present too. Though, not strongly; between low and medium.

M: Good mouth feel. Not overly carbonated. I am not overly familiar with the style, nor have I had many examples, but I like it. A slight dryness from the oak lingers.

O: This is a very good beer. I plan on drinking maybe one every 6 months to see how it changes. I don't know that it is worth the 12.99 I paid for the 4 pack.

Overall a delicious beer.

Founders Crumudgeon Old Ale has a thin, cream-colored head, a clear, brilliant, apricot-orange appearance, some bubble streams, no sediment, and very sparse, spider web lacing left behind. The aroma is of rich, sweet, malt, vanilla/oak, and light rum. Taste is all that, with some good, balancing bitterness and apparent wood. Mouthfeel is rather light and watery, and Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale finishes alcohilic, sweet, and contemplative. The worst one could say about this beer is that it is delicious.
